Anime vs Visual Novel
I just watched both seasons of Clannad without the knowledge there was a VN :(, i heard about VN is better.

Now my question is.... is the VN the exact thing or closely to the anime? (i mean the main argument of the story)... or do you have differents paths and storytelling is enough good to buy it? Thanks for the answers ^^

(They already buy my hearth with the DONGOPEDIA >_>)

It is better than the anime. It has better pacing, buildup and the Vn actually has other girl's routes. The anime is mainly Nagisa route that tries to incorporate other routes as well. This takes away buildup since it rushes many storylines by trying to compress it into one.

I might be in the minority with this, but I really think the anime is much better. The visual novel has so much useless padding until it gets to the really good parts, and that just draaags oooon... Anime cuts a lot of stuff, but honestly I think that's for the best. Maybe one of those routes they removed is actually worth reading in my opinion. The visual novel falls to the usual problem with Key where the main true route is pretty amazing and everything is just average, at best.

The VN is fantastic, I prefered some of the other girls ruites over the canon. Didn't get into the anime personaly, didnt know there was one until I'd finnished the VN months pervious. Does this version still let you skip previously read text from earlier compleations? The old one did & it helped not to go over the same bits alot. Would not recommend this enough to anyone slightly interested. Warning! you will cry at some point

Anime is adapted on a different format than the visual novel. While the anime is liner focused on Nagisa's route; the routes in the visual novel spread out in different branches, there is no liner storyline.

Always read source materials

As you can imagine, the VN has more details especially on the other routes that the anime only touch lightly on. But, I think the anime does a very good job overall especially with Nagisa's route, and Nagisa's route remains the canon/true end even in the VN

I'd say it's worth reading because it's such a great story.

As a matter of preference, I prefer the VN, I just do I love the story telling in it and all the different routes you get to see. Sure both seasons of the anime cover them, but I like this just all that more.

Hmm, for me this is a good example how anime adaptations of VNs should looks like. VN is a bit better in some ways, and a bit worse at the same time I think. But still, Kyoto Animation did a amazing work adopting this.

I love the anime.
If you want a comparisson, think in the anime as a compression. All routes except Tomoyo's and Kyou's are added in Nagisa's route, so the endings in the anime are made to fit as a "friends" ending with Nagisa always present while in the VN Nagisa only appears at Fuko's, Koumura's and herself routes.

If you liked the anime as I did, see the VN as a development of the characters, since instead being only co-protagonist with Nagisa and Tomoya, at the VN they are fully MC in their own route.

no love for Kappei :(

seriously, the anime is a great adaptation of the novel. I overall prefer the VN version (especially with some routes like Yukine's).
but i repeat, the anime is still great, I love both of 'em.

From what I remember, the anime just mixed all the routes into one big amalgamation, without going really in-depth in any of them.
Also, there's Sunohara Youhei's ending in the Visual Novel, just that alone make it worth it. Seeing him freak out as Tomoya makes "advances" on him is just priceless. One of the funniest moment in this.
