Why are the faces and eyes so derpy?
I'm not trying to create troll bait. I've heard of this series a bunch of times, but the eyes and faces are so beyond derpy that it sort of subconsciously removes what little interest I have in this game. I know that's superficial for a visual novel, but still...I can't shake the derpyness.

I’m okay even with Ryukishi07’s art but this is just disgusting. Is this the “improved visuals” they are trying to sell for $50?

I read some Umineko years back, and Ryukishi's art is passable in my mind, but this is just too far gone.

Not really. You should get used to it very quickly, and this is literally the worst sprite in the game. If you see only ugliness, then that's more a problem with your brain than anything else.

Your argument kinda started off well with "this is literally the worst sprite in the game.", then kinda fell short with "If you see only ugliness, then that's more a problem with your brain than anything else.".

While taste in artstyle definitely is subjective, some art is just not good. Using half-insults to prove that this isn't the case doesn't work.

Oh, I didn't quite mean it like that. The "brain" part was referring back to the "you should get used to it quickly".

Phrase was meant more as, "you probably gave up on it too soon"

It was a 2004 VN, and it's the art style of the Hinue sensei back in the days. Deal with it.

I am okay with Sunohara looking derpy because he is very derpy. Lol. Unfortunately, some of the other faces are a bit off as well, but his is definitely the worst.

A lot of people are becoming quite defensive. I'm so beyond the "it was 2004" argument... 2004 was ONLY 11 years ago, anime art wasn't DERPY status in 2004 and wasn't DERPY status in 1994 for that matter. There's such a small gap when you compared 2004 to 2014, as opposed to say 2004 to 1994...

Year just has NOTHING to do with why the art looks that way. Absolutely nothing to do with year.

Don't worry, a DLC to add mosaic to the faces is coming soon.

The problem with Ryukishi07 is that his "stories" are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ retarded and terribly written. You would have to pay ME to read something like Umineko.

That is complete nonsense, and you have no idea what you're talking about. There are incredible gaps in art between 2004 and 2014, and it being a 2004 VN is definitely a huge part of why it looks this way. The technical limitations combined with the evolving 'large eyes' art style back then is what caused the game to look like this. You seriously can't wave it off like it's a non-factor.

And really, the art is widely considered to be a non-issue, and I've also never heard of someone who did take issue with it who didn't grow on it within their first session. Even if you didn't grow on it, Clannad is definitely a game that would warrant you to look past the art if it looks bad to you.

It's a good game, and you're really just overreacting about the art part. Be more open-minded, and you should barely notice it.
Majora-爆発 Nov 25, 2015 @ 10:11pm
Look at games like Song of Saya, it's a VN that came out in 2003. You honestly can't blame it on the year, that's like saying older moves from 2004 would look ♥♥♥♥♥♥ because they're "from 2004" which is such a flawed argument. That being said, the art alone wouldn't be enough to turn me away. I'm super open minded, I just don't like constantly starring at derpy faces for hours on end.

The "it's art from 2004" excuse is terrible. I honestly have no idea why people are using it. Itaru Hinoue was pretty terrible at facial construction until about '07.

Still, complaints about the art are excessive. It's nowhere near Ryukishi- or ZUN-level art, and some people PREFER those to redone art. The only thing even mildly derpy are faces. Even then, the only sprite that stands out to me as excessive is Sunohara's (the blond guy's) shocked face. He's the butt of every joke in the game. It never bothered me that he looks stupid, because he usually is.

A toxic post from a mod? Really?

It's his own opinion that the art is ugly, and you diagnose him as having mental deficiencies, really?

Well, I didn't mean it that way, but it's kind of true that the human brain is supposed to be wired to be able to see "harmonious faces" even when proportions are slightly off. Not being able to do this is like being stuck in the state of mind you get in when you focus on just a person's eyes or nose. Their face will look extremely ugly and disproportionate. If you truly can't flexibly get used to a face that's proportioned at least somewhat reasonably, it probably is a genuine mental deficiency.

^_^
:)

The whole thing about the human brain being wired to see faces is true, or else how would we be able to see the above as faces? If somone can't tell what I posted was faces, then yes they do probably have a genuine mental deficiency.

However, not "getting used to a face" or rather having an opinion on what is and isn't good art isn't a mental deficiency.

I'm not saying this isn't good art, I'm just saying that people have the right to express their opinion without being right or wrong, when it truly is an opinion.
