Yes, there are bad endings in this game. There's a sort of "standard" bad end that you get if you wind up on no one's route or mess up a route early, and some have bad ends more tailored to that route. But there's no "penalty" for getting a bad end (well, other than any emotional impact). You just reload your game and try again.
I find that most outcomes seem to make sense. Sometimes you don't know that a decision is important right away, and you may have to replay a route to get it right. It's a very complex game that takes some patience to get through. Fortunately, there are these things going for this game:
- You have 100 save slots, so you could conceivably save at each decision point
- You have a means to rewind back to the previous decision
- The game's metadata tracks what text you've read independent of your saves, so you can quickly replay a route to make a different decision by fast-forwarding through text you've read.
I've only completed four routes so far, but no one's died in any of them. That's only a fraction of the story, so I don't know what lies ahead.
You don't strictly NEED a guide. I'm trying it without a guide. Some people use a guide because they just want to see the story right away.
And yes, this is a very long game. It's not a game you can play over a single weekend unless you were rigidly following a guide and are a speed-reader.
