Dude, there are so many similar topics already... Next time just try to search first. The anime is based on VN, you should not watch it first because it's basically cut and limited version of the VN.

it's the other way around, the anime is based on the game. the game has way more detail and all the missing routes the anime did not incorporate.

That said the anime is a very good digest version, one among the best VN adaptations.
After Story especially has an amazing direction, and the most iconic scenes are really empowered by it.

You could do worse than watching it before playing the Novel and you should really try watching, at the very least, the second half of After Story after playing the game.

nonono...very good anime but for adapting VN to anime, kind of poor... since it makes it seem like a mild harem before the main plot is explored. if you want to see good adaption see fate/stay night unlimited blade works. a whole series based on one path.

I humbly disagree.
The first half sticks faithfully to the slapstick manzai comedy of the school scenario to the point of adapting every single joke in the game (though obviously not every possibe joke outcome).
It does explore several main routes, and that is a given otherwise half of the cast would fall falt without any characterization. But it wastes pretty much nothing: every adapted arc relates in some way directly to the main plot (though the cat arc and the anime original Yukine arc are frankly redundant with each other, they are also very short so it is not much of a problem).
And then in the second half, when the actual After Story begins, the direction skyrockets to levels rarely seen in TV series.
The sunflowers scene is freaking perfection in anime format.

The UBW anime adptation has its own share of problems too, ironically especially direction-related, such as the pace that was all over the place, and I'm not sure I would put it above the Clannad anime, for sure I wouldn't put it over After Story.
That said it was a pretty hard challange adapting UBW in a way watchable for a public with zero knowledge of the Fate route, the results were overall good.

I already stated that I thought after story was a very good adaption, since that's where they get back to singular route... I mean, it's not only me who shares this sentiment, a lot of people wholeheartedly agree that after story is on a whole other level from regular CLANNAD, :awoo:

Plutia, I just want to agree and say that UBW adaptation is really great. Maybe it's not so good as an independent anime, but in terms of VN adaptation it did a really good job. All, except of episode 3 was ported brilliantly accurate. I'm a huge Fate VN fan and basically this adaptation let me into anime world. Looking forward for HF movies, I hope they'll make the ending based on a normal ending rather than good - this way it could became one of the best anime of all time.
