Is it worth it if I'll only play through once and not use a guide?
Hey everyone,

So I've started one VN (Fate Morgana) and I'm enjoying that a lot. I know from word of mouth that this is *the* VN to play. However, looking at multiple reviews, a lot say that you need a guide or to play multiple times.

I don't like playing story games through multiple times as I feel like it cheapens the experience, so I'm only likely to play this through once, and accept whatever ending I get as "my ending". I'm also not a fan of guides as they remove all the mystery from it the story, and when it's a story based game, it just seems silly to spoil it for myself.

So if I wasn't going to use a guide and only play through once... is it worth it?

You don't need a guide if you just want to play a single normal ending of the game, but if you want to play After Story which is included in the game, you will basically need to complete all the routes in the game which requires a bunch of replays to unlock it, fortunately the game has a skip read text button which can speed up replays and get you on the route's story much quicker. I would heavily recommend a guide, but if you want to avoid it, you can just peek at it if your stuck.

As for worth it for one playthrough. I still think it's worth it if you get to see your favourite character's ending. The game's routes are pretty long and as of writing this the game is on a pretty big sale.

I hope you will enjoy the game.

If your not playing all the routes, I recommend watching the anime after playing the VN so you can fill yourself in what you have missed.

I don't understand the weird self-restrictions you have in place, though: visual novels, as a rule, are made in such a way that you cannot access any but the least interesting and least canon endings/routes on the first playthrough. I get that you have a narrative around why you put these things down after just barely scratching the surface -- but honestly, if you're not willing to reconsider your stance on these things you probably shouldn't even bother with visual novels. Thinking back on all the ones I've read and experienced, if I try to imagine what it would be like if I'd only read through the first route: I can't say for sure I'd even *like* the genre... and for good reason. It would be like making the arbitrary and self-defeating decision that I was only willing to play a Mario Bros. game without employing the "jump" mechanic, and then putting the game aside forever after falling into the first pit and stubbornly insisting I had completed and finished experiencing the game.

Like you, I try to play through the first time without any guidance and make "organic" choices (any good guide also suggests this)... but that's when the next level of real VN fun begins. It's also typically when the story actually starts to get interesting. 💣~💥

To come back to this one - I have finished a play through of Clannad, without a guide, and I really enjoyed it. I think I will play through it again and make some different choices, and then maybe use a guide if I want to in the future.

I was very surprised by how good this game was.

Which ending have you received btw (if you don't mind sharing)?

Fuko ❤️

I liked the pranks and light hearted nature of the relationship, and then when it takes a more serious tone I was already invested in her character and it made sense to follow through on that one.

I have since done a few playthroughs and enjoyed them, but I think I need a break before going again. I know that I need to unlock the after story to see the true ending (having read up on it since doing a few playthroughs) but it does feel more like work than fun if I’m honest. I might just watch the anime instead!

Did steam just block out F u k o? Is it a swear word in another language? 🤔

Steam blocked it but doesn't hurt to just say Fūko instead.

Yeah, if it feels like work, best to postpone it until it doesn't.

More like for some reason steam treats it as if it contains 'c' between 'u' and 'k'.
