When does the story start?
I am 4 hours in and bored out of my mind. Nothing has happened and all the characters are one dimensional tropes.

Does it ever actually get good, or does it just stay a slice of life trope fest?

Sounds like the game might not be for you, I personally find the later part of the stories the best (as I replayed common route way too many times). May I ask where you are up to in the game?

I don't even know how to explain because nothing has happened. I guess the last 3 "plot" points were:

Tomoya felt up Tomoyo's boobs, Sunohara was trying to get the Fillit of Fish sandwich, Tomoya and Furukawa made club fliers.

I tend to really like visual novels, I just expect by the 3-4 hour mark to start getting a feeling for whats going on. But so far it's just... school and tropes. Does it actually have a plot or is it just slice of life?

Doesn't sound like you are far in the story yet, I would recommend at least completing it. But I don't think this VN is for you, I personally had fun reading the whole thing on my first run(which was Kyou). And I don't find all routes to be all about school ofc the start is, not sure about the tropes.

I looked up how long it is to beat and it said 80-140 hours so again I ask, how long does it take to get interesting. So far nothing has happened. Not a single thing.

At this point, it is mainly suppose to be funny at the beginning and gives you an idea about the characters. It is for sure slow and there is no shame in just watching the faster pace anime. I personally liked it a lot but it isn't for everyone. Even the first time I played it before I had really played any vns, I sort of stalled on it but I was glad to finish it years later. It was just that I had watched the anime and there is more in the vn, but a lot of it I had seen.

I mean your options are stop playing it right now or finish one route then decide... even one route is still pretty long.

Pretty sure that 80-140 is all routes + After Story and everyone's interest is different, I like the parts where the characters become really good friends and onwards and that might just be me.

Ah okay how long would you estimate one route is then?

Tbh i'm not sure, I know they are long.

well i just got 16 hours to get 3 route (Misae, Tomoyo, and Yukine), with skipped when start again. I am myself honestly enjoying the game even i already watch the anime for a long time ago.

I played the game before watching the anime and I enjoyed it.

I agree with you, if I didn't like the anime so much I probably wouldn't continue playing this game :/

Not trying to troll.

Maybe this VN (story) just isn't for you.
Personally I quite like the slice of life & humor slapped into it but if you're not intho those 2 things the VN might get pretty boring.

And it's the same for the anime really. Like the first half of the first season is mostly humor and slice of life.
And even once the serieus stuff kicks in there's still quite some Slice of life & humor at various points.

Sadly you can't refund a game anymore once you past the 2 hours mark.

Yea, I dropped it after the replies I got. I wanted to like it so bad. The sad thing is that I really love VN's generally, and I love stories that will make me cry, so I always heard about CLANNAD and was super hyped for it haha.

Thats unfortunate to hear that you dropped the VN. I enjoyed reading it. Since it seems to be the story you were not interested in maybe check out Little Busters!, at the very least take a read at the "About This Game" section, LB! has much more things going on in the story which you might like. Feels more lively imo, Although its still one of those stories based in school.

I haven't read Little Busters! so I will give it a go! I have actually really enjoyed some stuff from Key in the past, so I was also expecting to like CLANNAD based on that. (I watched AIR and Angel Beats!. Angel Beats! is probably one of my favorite animes, actually.)

My main issue with CLANNAD is it just felt like it was hitting every anime trope it could. Which, I guess if you are into that style of anime, that's great, but for me personally it takes away from the world building and makes it hard for me to care about any of the characters since they all just feel like tropes.

Also slightly off topic, but just to give you an idea of what I like, my favorite VN's have been Ever17, Tsukihime, STEINS;GATE and Chaos;HEAd, and of course I love stuff like 999 and Phoenix Wright if you wish to include those hahaha. But yea, I think what I like tends to be a bit more... non generic? I like my edgy stuff hahaha.
