For a little more information, I'm developing using Unity and I'm using their standard sound integration as well as a plugin that gives me a ton more control. I'll bet it's either a conflict between them or a problem with the plugin.
I'll do some more testing and see what I can figure out.
After I finished the game and it returned me back to the main menu it had a computer typing sound as it scrolled all the menu options that wasn't there when I started. So I started a new game to see if that carried through and now all of a sudden sound was everywhere. Windows and doors opening had swooshes, there were footstep sounds, doors that didn't open had beeps, etc.
Almost a different game once the sounds were present, but in a way I felt even more isolated and alone playing with so much silence.
I didn't recognize it as a bug at first or I would have tried to pull some logs or something. It only happened the very first play through. I've started up the game 15 or so times since and sound has always worked, so it's something with the initial install. I also checked my Event Viewer from the time I first started and nothing got logged.
Well okay, there's just no footstep sounds or door noises, the audio in the library played and some other switches here and there.
The silence makes me feel like i should expect a jump scare. Geez.
