It DOES exist in the Unity Version.
I found some underground in a wormhole/cave-thing when cheating (Flying through the earth). It was deeeep underground and I probably would have been too scared to go that deep without the cheat, as I find those wormholes to be VERY oppressive.
(I actually wonder if I have Claustrophobia, purely due to the sense of anxiety I get whenever I go into them! )

Sulfur is deep underground, if you're not finding it, you're not deep enough

I found most of it when I got down to where there is water deep in the caves. There is a lot of gold usually there too. I always use the return to surface cheat as I cannot face all those twists and turns on the way back out without feeling dizzy.

Oh, BTW...I forgot that I ALSO found some Sulphur POWDER in some of the rectangular frozen Ice blocks (which contain chests within them) that one discovers in the Snow Biome (in the icy/blue areas of the Biome).
Not a large quantity, and not in every chest, but a bonus, nonetheless!

One time, I found some near the top of a cave system but, in general, my experience is that it doesn't show up much until you reach underground water. Building an ore detector helps because sometimes it will be in a cave wall that you would have no reason to mine out if you didn't know it was there.
Also, when you do start finding it, be careful because it's likely that the sulfur at your feet is the roof of a deep cavern.
