Overpowered default tool?
Started a new map last night after not playing for a while, and I can knock down any tree on the Unity version with a default stone axe with two swings. Is this right? Whats the purpose of even upgrading?

Update: Figured out what was going on a few posts down

The game is still in the WIP stage or alpha in my eyes, still odds and ends that need tweaking but it is still worth it.

With tool durability being a thing now people were having issues with the default stone axe breaking before they gathered enough wood to make a new one. The increased durability makes it worth the upgrades.

Durability is a moot feature right now, as even marked as "broken" I was still dropping trees with two swings, so not sure why people were complaining about tools breaking when I'm still able to use it after it's considered broken?

Takes 8 logs to make a workbench, 1 log to make 4 pieces of lumber, and those 4 pieces of lumber makes 16 sticks, which is enough wood to make 8 primitive axes. Again, why were people having issues collecting wood for axes? You can literally make 8 axes by dropping two trees.

Seems to me the easiest way of fixing this would be just allowing the axe to be crafted on the player, instead of needing a workbench, so you don't need 8 initial logs to craft the primitive axes. Keep the durability low and the axe swings consistent and just go with that. Its way too easy to collect wood now imo.

Heh, well, wait till you start mining.

Actually the primitive axe requires a lot more hits to knock down a tree oO If you're able to knock them down with just 2 hits, this indicates that either creative mode is active, or the "Instant digging" option in the miscellaneous game settings is enabled (if you're playing in multiplayer, this is controlled serverside) - both result in every tool just needing 1-2 hits to destroy any object or plant ^^

Oh yeah, I saw the instant digging on last night and turned it off. However, I hit escape to get out of the menu, I just went back in and saw that tiny "Save" button at the bottom. :buzzed:

Out of curiosity why is instant dig on by default?

I also see that in the permissions, all of the creative stuff is "True", however my game mode is survival. Is there a way to turn all of that creative stuff off or does that not matter as long as the game is listed in Survival?

Thanks for the reply!

That's interesting, I was playing over the last few days and it was taking fifteen swings to fell a tree. Never mind, I see you've discovered what was going on.

Hmm... actually this setting is disabled by default (AFAIK it was never enabled by default in earlier versions) oO Did you maybe enable it by accident in the past? The game keeps all changes over different versions, so depending on when you first played the new version, it might have been changed long ago?

The permissions stuff is maybe a bit misleading in singleplayer... it's mainly relevant in multiplayer. Basically it just means that you are allowed to use the creative mode tools (because in singleplayer, you have full permission) ;) But maybe it would be better if we remove that button in singleplayer ^^

Creative mode is enabled via console command btw. If you want to disable it, you can disable "Allow Console Commands" in the miscellaneous game settings (this will disable all console commands though).

I didn't know instant dig was a thing until I saw it was on the other day. I'll create a new world and see if its on or off now that I toggled and saved it.

Edit: It seems instant dig is off now by default, but when I first created a world disable hunger, disable temperature, instant dig, and all of that stuff was on by default. I never play creative so everything should have been set like a proper survival game. Maybe something weird happened when it updated because I had a settings file from when the Unity version first came out? I'm not sure if Instant Dig was available then, I don't remember it, but either way I don't think I would have had a reason to have it on?

Will that stuff eventually be added to the world creation screen or will it remain in the gameplay settings after you create the world?

If you've already played the first release of the new version back then, the config file will still remain there (even if you disable the beta branch again). The "Instant digging" option was indeed there from the very beginning ^^

We have been thinking about that, and yes, probably we will indeed move that to the world settings :D Right now you can change the settings at any time - basically this is a good thing, but it could make the game a bit too easy sometimes, because players could cheat themselves (e.g. if a player finds something precious, but doesn't want to risk losing it on the way home, he could simply enable peaceful mode temporarily until he's safe - this takes away any challenge, which also reduces fun).

Of course the game must still provide a way to change the settings retroactively, but this would require the player to return to the main menu, so there is less temptation to do that ^^

You could have a way to lock the settings, I always use those if available if I want a serious play through with no temptation. I know I have an issue with that sometimes, I'm like "I don't reeeaaaallllyyyy want to take this chance because I'm sooooo far away and I'll lose everything if it goes badly, but I also don't want to cheat....but it's riiight there...." and I eventually give in and set it to keep inventory on (or I'm really far from my house and don't want to travel back, I'll turn it on, die, then turn it back off). I know that's a self-control issue, but it's too tempting when it's readily available.

I also found that if I give in to temptation one time, it's like you said, it just sucks all the fun out of the game, because now I cheated, and I feel there's no reason to keep playing, but every time I'm tempted I tell myself "oh, that won't happen this time, it's only for 10 seconds" lol

Enjoying the new version though, it now really feels on par or better than the Java version gameplay-wise (no offense intended at all). Awesome work on this over the years, looking and feeling great!
