Aluminum is in the arctic biome with are their own islands to the north. Gold is in the arid biome which is it's own islands to the south.
To get to an arctic island, you'll have to craft a boat and travel over the sea towards north. North from your starter island, there is always an arctic island, and south from your starter i sland, there is always an arid island (where you can find gold accordingly) :)
Thanks. Was mostly on the edges of the islands, but traveled a bit into the forested areas however got chased out. Throwing it into peaceful mode until I find what these look like. Appreciate the response! :)
I found some in a cave, though it seems in the arctic region caves are more rare? Even the rocks in the forests were mostly just rocks, not aluminium ores.
Once i had sufficient to get the metal detector it was a bit more easy but still compared to iron or other ores it was rare.
One thing I've noticed is that if I find a vein of anything, there is often another vein nearby, so keep an eye out for that one little shiny pixel in the dark. I also use a sledgehammer to round out the caves and sometimes that exposes a vein that is just outside the cave wall.
You can find big stone boulder in the forest, the more bright stone are sometime contain aluminum. You can sometime see the different to the normal stone (darkerI in the forest on the Artic island. I have found so a lots of Aluminium but need running around a lot too. :-D
Make sure to also wear some headgear, like a wooly or ushanka (in addition to the balaclava), that should usually be sufficient, at least during the day (unless there is heavy snowfall or a blizzard).
