If I remember correctly for the Unity version go to the loom and press "F". It is used just like a workbench. You simply have different things that require a workbench / modern workbench / loom to craft. If you enter the crafting menu select any item and somewhere it should say which kind of crafting station the item requires to craft e.g. "crafting stations loom".

As mentioned by @R0ck7ane, basically the loom is a crafting requirement for certain items - so when crafting an item, just make sure the loom is in your proximity ^^
But you can also just access the loom (by pressing F while looking at it) to bring up the crafting menu ;)

I go to the loom and press F but I don't see any different items to craft in the menu. the only cloth I can find to craft is the coarse cloth but no cloth. I am in the unity version as well. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but items that have the 'cloth' requirement can be crafted using 'coarse cloth'. If you use the search field at the top of the crafting menu and enter 'cloth' only 'coarse cloth' appears. I'm guessing normal/better 'cloth' isn't implemented (yet).

if that is so, then one cannot craft the map yet either

You can craft cloth (corase cloth) without a loom (we did that in order to make bandages available earlier), but currently you need the loom to craft certain clothings and also to craft the sail for the sailing boat ;)

To craft the map (i.e to get paper), you can just craft the coarse cloths, then turn it into rags at the grinder which can then be turned into paper at the paper press.

Actually, this way you told me to do it makes way more sense then trying to use cloth. I'm happy I made this little "happy accident".
