To pick the furnace up, hold F while looking at it, then select "Pickup" (keep the mouse button pressed) ;)
Alternatively there is also a console command available to change the rotation of construction elements or objects retroactively without having to pick them up. To do that, open the console and type "edit rotate x y z" while looking at the object (provide rotation values for x, y and z - it's the rotation around the particular axis, e.g. "edit rotate 0 90 0" to rotate it by 90° around the up-axis). But as mentioned, the easier (and intended) way is usually to pick up the object, then place it again ^^
If you want to reset the scale of a block btw (to turn the element into a 1x1x1 block again), you can press shift + backspace accordingly.
If you're playing the Java version and you want to place blocks, you cannot rotate them unfortunately (although some shapes like slopes or stairs can be rotated by 90°). You can only rotate construction elements (like planks and beams) or objects (like furniture).
However, if you're playing the new version, you can freely rotate any element (including blocks).
You can rebind the left/right arrow keys to the mouse wheel of course (at least in the new version), but by default the mouse wheel is used to change the equipped item... and in fact it's not sufficient for full control, because it's possible to rotate elements around all 3 axes (and the mouse wheel would only cover 1 axis) =/
well. it works fine. probably you just didnt do it right. no problem there, here is the explanation:
with default keys:
shift + arrow keys or pg-up/dn keys = making blocks larger or smaller
ctrl + arrow keys or pg-up/dn keys = rotating the blocks
to make that work you need to have the block equipped in your hotbar and selected, so you can see that the building block is held in the hands of your character.
already placed blocks can´t be rotated anymore, afaik. maybe with the above mentioned console command (but that post was 2022).
also as red said, in the officially promoted java-version blocks cant be rotated. only planks and beams can.
but in the newly developed unity-version you can rotate and resize all blocks and shapes.
