Long Version taken from forum:
If you want to play multiplayer, and host the game on your computer, there are two possible ways doing it:
1.Go to the singleplayer menu, select a world and hit the red "Open for LAN" button. This starts a multiplayer session, so other people are able to join your game (please note that your server will not appear in the serverlist, so your friends have to connect via IP).
2.Download the dedicated server files and start a dedicated server. We offer a startscript for Windows, Mac and Linux. It's highly recommended to have Java 8 installed in order to run the server.
In short: If you simply want to play with some friends, it's recommended to start a LAN game. If you want to run the server in background (or you don't want to join the game), it's recommended to start a dedicated server.
when crafting certain things will they always be free? I saw a video where some of the work stations are free to craft? Is this still around? I am trying to find a good lan game for me and my friends
I always go to ipchicken.com or you can just Google "what's my IP"
There is a creative mode where everything is free and survival mode where eventually nothing will be free.
At the moment though glass and posters are free, stone makes all blocks, any log makes all wood blocks probably someting else I missed.
Bear in mind its still early access and I suppose sorta half way between alpha and beta. No pvp and at the moment no character customisation but it will eventually come. Water is the next big update, well static water at least.
In my opinion still a good game: if you like building and less survival get it now if you want more survival and less building then wait a patch or two (the dungeons and mobs patch)
If you want to help get it to the "more survival" buy it now to show your support, every little bit helps.
Dedicated servers being for something more serious in multiplayer sessions. You all jump in at various times to do various things. It's a 24/7 thing that you don't have to worry abotu when someone jumps in or not.
[Note: It's recommended to restart server hosting for dedicated 1 per day to settle any bugs & glitches. This is normal, even on Minecraft.]
