Originally it was our intention to have a separate "cooking station" (or maybe just a cutting board or something like that), but it didn't make it into this update. The "food recipes" would then probably only be available at this cooking station (instead of the regular crafting menu).
But for now, maybe it's not a bad idea to change the crafting requirement for dough (so an oven needs to be in proximity instead of a workbench)?
1. Grow the wheat, check
2. Harvest the wheat, check
3. Grind the wheat into flour, check
4. Mix flour and water to make dough... don't see this yet (might want yeast from somewhere or else it shouldn't rise)
5. Want to get a little fancier? Add in a cooking pan to form the bread, though the current method is used often in real life
6. Bake the dough in the oven to make bread
That would extend to any of the cooking recipes. You would mix or prepare the ingredients on the cooking table to create an item that gets baked in the oven. Right now it seems like there is a little bit of magic going on, but it's a good first start.
And I'll just throw in that this could be a first try at an abstract craft table. I put a preparation table into a guardhouse I was building with the idea that you would prepare the ingredients on this area, then cook them on the stove behind it, which I'm still waiting for a placeable heating element that I could actually make my stove a real cooking place. :) If we had more abstract elements for crafting, we could build our own stations around them and just use the properties of the crafting station. Having stock stations works for those quick and dirty situations, but I'd love to see us being able to build around them to make them unique to what we're trying to build.
For example, the current oven seems far too big for the little bakery I'm envisioning it being the center point of. We'll see.
We do have some plans for some more interactive cooking steps (e.g. cutting vegetables etc). Having specific baking pans for the bread dough would be probably also a nice addition, we'll keep that in mind ^^
Actually this was our original plan for cooking. While this is definitely more fun, it also requires a lot more work to implement, so we decided to take this slightly simpler approach for now due to time constraints. For the time being we'll probably stick to the mix of having some recipes (with a bit of magic going on) and having certain interactive steps (cooking/baking the food, cut ingredients manually etc) ^^
But this is still something that could be implemented in the long run (once the game has recovered) ;)
This definitely sounds like a good idea :)
We've also prepared a modern stove, but we didn't add it with this update because we don't have electricity yet (and it felt a bit weird if the modern stove works automagically without fuel or power, while the masonry oven still requires coal) ^^
Salt will certainly play a bigger role in the future. Maybe we'll add minable salt in the future, but we have also been thinking about just evaporating water to obtain salt.
Hmm... did you place the grill before or after the update? I just tested it and it worked fine on my end, but if the grill was placed before the update, maybe something went wrong with world conversion (so it no longer works properly now)?
Maybe try this: while the fire is active, look at the grill and type "objectinfo" into console. The first line should them be something like "Object campfiregrill ID: ...", and there should be a 2nd line beginning with "Meta object", which has an "active" flag. Is that true or false? If it's false (while the fire is active) or if the "Meta object" line is missing, it indicates that it's broken for some reason oO In this case, you have to pick it up and place it again.
Fixed now. Picking it up and placing it worked again.
I took my 6 units of wheat and made flour of it.
I make a bread dough and a cookie dough.
Put them in the oven and lit it.
Eventually the cookie dough turned into a cookie.
The bread dough is still dough after many hours (game hours).
I picked up the cookie.
Is there a chance there's a bug with the cookie ? The cookie went into fast-use box number 1 in my inventory. I used to have an axe there. I can do stuff with the cookie as expected, but I can't find the axe anywhere. Is there a chance that it got 'replaced' with the cookie ?
Also, how long does it take to cook bread ?
Bread actually takes roughly 15 (realtime) minutes until it's ready ^^
Hmm... of course there is a chance that there is some sort of bug oO Not sure... if this happens again, do you mind sending us a report? Maybe it contains more information about what went wrong :)
To send a report, just open the console and type "report" (then maybe add some additional information like "item in inventory slot x vanished")
Prior. Everything has to be updated one way or another ha.
Yikes. Yeah, we need that alarm block, or in-game timer on hand. I won't change the settings, yet a timer is in order.
Last quote is aimed at Pesky so I'll leave them to it. I have noticed cookies are easier to cook, and more fun.

The grill works fine & I have that in the kitchen.
