Iron Ore

Just started playing the game today. (Couldn't play yesterday due to a bug)
Just wondering what the optimal method of finding is? Is there a trick to finding iron?
Am I able to do something similar to branch mining in Minecraft to find Iron and other ores underneath mountains or deep underground?

As an aside, are caves meant to be almost vertical shafts? How does one get down them without falling to their death?

You can find iron and other ores on the sides of mountains, sides of caves, in ponds, and in lakes (ETA. as well as underground). To find gold, sulfur, and menthril you need to go deep underground. I have rarely found gold at 200 ft underground but it usually is found at 600 or more ft underground.

Yes caves are vertical shafts. You can build ladders, using wood, with the workbench or dig down them.

Some ores you find mostly deep down, like gold or mithril.
But iron you can get at any height. Doing a grid and mining makes sense.
Though i usually find enough when mining for stone to build. No extra searching needed.

Caves are yet like wormholes. Vertical, horizontal, diagonal.

You have the ability to walk like a mountain goat. Be careful and you can just walk down along the sides.

But building ladders or digging down or building a ramp with planks is more safe

Or mine a sloping spiral ramp from the side walls of your cave if you don't want to bother building something with wood. I have a fear of heights and falling so I cut back into the walls a bit to make my ramps extra wide so I don't feel as if I'm right on the edge. :)

When I am going down in the mine, sometimes it is useful for me to press F2, so that I don't fall, also I press F3 to realize how deep I am.

Iron, Copper, and Tungsten,silver -1/-500 Gold -200/-800 mithril,sulfur -400/-800 and Iron, Copper, and Tungsten,silver,coal can be found on side of mountains and big hills with rock exposure and sometimes in smaller spots of rocks.That is a estimate of where they are not a exact hope that helps Edit: use f3 to see the xyz cords
