Very bad (steady) FPS when playing on server.
Hey folks,
Now I have this game for quite some time, even before water and stuff was a thing, and never really got into it so much. Now I decided to hop into a multiplayer server and see what it's like. Now my FPS there did not go above 30. (Sticking between 20 - 26), so I tried hosting my own server since I have a very powerful machine. But the exact same issues there. (20 - 26 FPS). Now I noticed if I walk around to actually loot and explore, and it loads all the map chunks, my FPS will go down to a painful 8 FPS and stays around there. I tried different worlds (I currently have my own Singleplayer survival world) but an empty map or a heavy loaded creative map did make zero difference. (Note that on my SP world, same map, I get 200+ FPS)

I would love to be able to properly host my server (No one joined as of yet, so I can't really test if this is my own hardware or just some cheeki breeki bug) as I do with a lot of games.

Hardware specs:
* GTX 1080 TI - 8GB VRAM
* 32GB RAM
* i7 7700k - 4,5 GHz

I'd love if someone has an easy 'fix' for this, because as of now, server multiplayer for me is unplayable.

Kind regards,
Sirion.

Also, WITH plugins it lags, WITHOUT plugins it's fine. (Still Singleplayer runs with 150 FPS while the server does it with 50 - 60)

Hi, I can confirm that this plugin causes this "lags".
I analyzed the code and found a severe issue in a high frequently called function (everytime the player moves) which causes increased gpu resource consumption every step you move without freeing it afterwards.

After a few minutes you can feel the effect: massive frame rate drop.

I recommend to contact the plugin author and report him this severe issue.

Do you use the Steam version of the game, or the standalone (according to Steam, you don't own the game oO)? When using the standalone (non-Steam) version, some additional steps are required...

Probably the easiest way would be to post a report file. This file provides all relevant information to find out if there is something wrong with the memory allocation, drivers or graphics card assignment. To create a report file, run the game, open the console (by pressing ` or ~) and type "report", now a file called "report" shows up in your game directory. Please open the file with a text editor, copy the content and paste it here. Alternatively send the file via email to support@jiw-games.net ;)

Well your system is way more powerful than mine and I run 20 fps not having any stuttering. Maybe you should turn off some stuff. I only have a 930 graphics card.

Turn off that F3 monitor thing.. that kills my FPS.

Sorry though, but I can't play with 20 FPS.

I have the game on my old Steam account, using shared library.
I don't know why, but I restarted the game, rejoined my server, immediately opened console and wrote "report", and now my FPS sits at 120... On my own server, didn't restart it nor changed anything... (I restarted the game multiple times before, only watching my FPS go from 100+ to 20 within 10 seconds.

Here's the report file:

Nevermind, FPS drops to 23 again...

I never play online, but I decided to go into a server to test and I played with 54fps.
GTX970 and all video settings maximized.

It instantly drops when I start walking.

Thanks for the report file! Everything looks good so far. You could update the graphics driver, but I don't think this actually causes these issues ;)
The fact that the fps raised when creating the report file seems to be just a coincidence - basically the "report" command does nothing but create a new file in the game directory ^^

So this issue only occurs in multiplayer, no matter if running you join a public mp server or run the server on your local machine? You don't run into similar issues when playing singleplayer? oO

What antivirus program do you use? Do you use an additional firewall? Singleplayer and multiplayer use the same mechanics (i.e. even in singleplayer there is something like a "server" running in the background, although it's not reachable from outside), the only difference is that singleplayer uses no networking at all (so the particular packets were passed to the server directly and vice versa).
If the performance issues only occur in multiplayer (even when using the same world), maybe a firewall or antivirus program is resonsible for this.

Do you run any plugins? Maybe the server you're playing on uses any plugins which could have an impact on the performance (although this does not explain why the performance issues also occur on your local server)...

Did you try to restart your computer after these issues occurred? I realized that this can have a huge impact on the performance in some cases ^^

Another thing you could try is reducing the detail view distance a little bit. Your hardware should be able to handle the max view distance properly, but maybe the networking is really causing some trouble here (and the higher the view distance, the more packets the server has to send to the client).
Sirion 18 maj, 2018 @ 18:10
Singleplayer runs with 200+ FPS always, and never drops below 150 (Sometimes I do have slight drops when my girlfriend is building a huge tower next to my encampment lol) but yeah, I tried a public MP server where there were like 4 other players, same issue (drops beneath 20 FPS when starting to walk about ten meters, with a HD built spawn though.) My server is on my local machine, and also tried hosting it on my MSI gaming laptop, where the exact same happens.

I only have Windows Defender as antivirus. Got no additional firewall. My server has just 4 plugins as I was looking to join a totally simple PvE survival server, but there just were no simple ones. Mine has a /sethome plugin, doors & chest protection, and lastly a plugin which you can make the days longer with. I tried every common possible fix (validating cache, restarting PC, restarting server, lowering settings) but just nothing makes multiplayer playable for me.

**EDIT**
You should take note that I built my machine with serverhosting in mind, also I host all different kinds of servers. I also tried to host Rising World after shutting down my other servers (which were just two (empty) Rust servers running at the time) when I restarted my PC and tried again. No difference at all.

What happens if you remove the plugins? Do you still run into the performance issues?

Usually Windows Defender does not cause much trouble, but some people actually had issues with it in the past (in rare cases).
I'd recommend to put the game on the exception list of Defender :)

You could also try to run the game in LAN mode (just to see if it also suffers from the fps issues). To do that, go to the singleplayer menu and click on the small circle next to the "Play with friends" button, this turns the button into a red "Open for LAN" button. Now select the world and hit the red button. Basically the LAN mode is almost the same as a dedicated server (not a separate process though, but still uses a socket connection). Do you still get the fps drops?

I always play Singleplayer with that open, because sometimes my girlfriend likes to randomly join. But no, that doesn't give the FPS drop. I will try without plugins now. I'll edit this post after.

**EDIT**
It now sits between a stable 40 - 50, well playable, but now I can't open any containers I've placed. Giving me the error in the server "SEVERE: Chest (ID: xx) not found!"

**EDIT 2**
It's definitly a loading/render issue, because when I stand still directly after spawning it goes from 180 FPS upon spawn to 70 - 80 FPS after about 20 seconds (still a massive drop) and stays there. Then when I start moving, or either way I spawn and immediately start moving, the FPS will go from 180 to 30 in less than 30 seconds.
Senast ändrad av Sirion; 18 maj, 2018 @ 19:11
red51  [utvecklare] 18 maj, 2018 @ 19:24
Does it happen with all chests? What happens if you place a new chest (or remove a chest and place it again), does it still output this error?

The message indicates that the actual chest (i.e. the content) related to the object was not found. What's the id of the chest (a regular number, or -1)?
All chests are stored in the world database in the "Chests" table, usually you only see this message if either the world database (or more precisely, the chest table) is corrupted, or if a plugin messed up the id's (but I'm not aware of any plugins doing this, since the API does not provide direct access to that) oO Which plugins did you use exactly? What sort of chest was it exactly (crate, chest, tent etc)? Is the chest still broken after restarting the server?

About the loading issue: The game is really depends on fast access to the hard drive. Even though an SSD is beneficial, a regular HDD is definitely sufficient (as long as it has 7200 RPM, but 5400 RPM should still be fine, more or less). However, if something seriously slows down the access to the hard drive (security software, defective hardware, hard drive suffering from bad sectors, other software doing intense read/write operations in background etc), this has a huge impact on performance - but only while the character is moving.
However, this does not seem to be the problem in your case, since the issue does not occur in singleplayer (if it's really coming from the hard drive, you would experience the same issues in sp). Even if the server is slowed down for some reason, this should not affect the client fps (on a slow server the world takes forever to load, but this has no impact on the framerate). So it must be a clientside issue.
If you have an SSD, you could still try to install the game there. Otherwise it might be worth a try to run CHKDSK (just to be on the safe side). You could also try to delete the "cache" folder in your game directory (while the game is not running).
Sirion 18 maj, 2018 @ 19:56
Regarding the plugin, that might be because I removed the Chest- and Door Protection plugins since they don't work as intended in the first place.

Thing with my SSD is that I have a 500 GB SSD and it's completely full. I'd have to really squeeze the game in there, maybe with just a few 100 Bytes spare if I'm able to delete something. (There's just one game on it, which is Squad, as that game literally took 6 minutes to load me into a game.) And I just want to play, not wait. (An average human being already waits 75% of their entire lifetime...) My HDD is a 3TB external HDD (And my only extra harddrive) but I'm not sure if that ♥♥♥♥♥ up my framerate that bad... It kinda aggrevates me since it's totally unplayable for me.. (I kinda bought the game back then for it being like Minecraft with awesome graphics, and its multiplayer which was still in development back then, hence why I didn't play it so much.) What are the chances that putting it on my SSD will fix the FPS? Because I'm not really gonna risk moving/deleting files from my SSD, maybe only Squad, since I don't play it that regularly anymore. My issue seems like an uncommon/rare one, which sucks because I just want to play; rather than waiting all the time. There's no easy fix like "Just do this and turn this off and you good." I've got one of the most powerful desktops of 2017 (as I built it early 2017) and I cannot and will not believe that this is caused by my hardware... I nearly never have problems regarding FPS (Only with exceptions like heavily modded gameplay) but this is not the case. Is it really this hard to find and solve..??

Unfortunately the chest- and door protection plugins are outdated, they still rely on the player name for identifying a player (since the recent changes in February, player names are no longer unique, instead the SteamID is used). But the plugin creator released a new "Object Protection" plugin which replaces the door/chest plugis and it's fully compatible with the current version of the game.
However, as far as I can tell, neither the "Object Protection" nor the "Chest Protection" plugin messes up the world data...

About the performance issue: Well, the external hard drive could be the bottleneck in this case. But this still does not explain why there are no issues in singleplayer.
It really depends on what type of hard drive you have exactly. A lot of external hard drives only have 5400 RPM (especially if it's a compact 2.5" drive), which is notably slower than 7200 RPM.
In addition to that, the type of connection is crucial: if the HDD is connected via USB 2.0, it's most likely responsible for the performance issues. USB 3.0 is a lot faster than USB 2.0, but much slower than SATA III, and basically still slower than the outdated SATA II (due to the overhead and other limitations related to USB).

In a nutshell, modern external hard drives are usually always slower than modern internal hard drives... USB 3.0 is still more or less sufficient for most games which have a pre-designed world. The world is loaded once (probably you experience longer loading times), but that's it.
Rising World, on the other hand, has a procedural world which is generated on the fly, a fast hard drive is really important for this (since it frequently accesses the hard drive).

Another problem of using an external hard drive for gaming is the reduced life span: most external hard drives are usually not meant to be permanently in use (especially if frequent read/write operations are going on), especially the higher temperatures reduce the life span of the drive over time (slowing down the hard drive even more)... if the hard drive isn't that old, this probably doesn't matter very much in this case.

Do you have another, internal hard drive (besides the SSD)? I can't say for sure if moving the game to the SSD really does the trick. It's obvious that the external hard drive slows down the game, but it's still strange that you don't experience these issues in singleplayer oO

No extra internal harddrive. My SSD is a fast NVMe 500GB harddrive that was just put on the market early 2017 and my PC was one of the first which got this new SSD system. As how my uncle described it, NVMe is the fastest connection for harddrives to date, however I myself don't have too much knowledge about hardware and all that crap.

My external HDD is connected through USB 2.0, but even though you say it's "most likely responsible for the performance issues" isn't it weird that Singleplayer runs all fine..?? As that for me is the bottleneck which yet holds me to moving it over.

(Off-topic: Do you ever get sleep lol? XD )

Oh, yes, NVMe (e.g. M.2) is the fastest possible way to connect an SSD to the computer. NVMe drives provide a much faster read/write speed than regular SATA III SSDs ;)

However, USB 2.0 is definitely a bottleneck... I agree, it totally makes no sense that singleplayer works fine, but a hard drive connected via USB 2.0 slows down the game for sure.

Of course there is a chance that there is still something else going on which causes these performance issues in your case, so there is unfortunately no guarantee that moving the game to the SSD really fixes the problem =/

(btw., can't wake up late if I never go to sleep :D)

I mean you only slept for a handfull of hours..?? Hahaha no but I'll try moving it to my SSD in a bit, and report back afterwards.
