Wish the vanilla elevators shall work like the ones in Conan Exiles where you set up two points and it'll allow you to travel between those two points realistically.
Someone may have to update the older one or just make a new one all together. It's doable. Someone has to bite the bullet.
Similar to Minecraft, don't dig straight down. Be insanely cautious. Don't be afraid to even sit on a ladder as you dig down. Use CTRL to move down ladder cautiously.
I haven't worked up the nerve to try any of the nearly vertical shafts I've come across. Getting down is easy but... anyway yeah I carry a bunch of ladders and you can place those above and remove them below you (or just leave them) so that is one way. I've also cut ramps to get around vertical shafts blocking a horizontal tunnel, and longer spiraling ramps to descend. What would be cool is being able to secure a line at the top and climb back up it.
And yeah, can't wait for ropes and fishing with nets on boats. Shall be awesome. Even fishing from boats shall be awesome.
- Go to block bench and find rounded sloped blocks so you can apply your ladders to something. Pick any block texture/ID you want.
- Pick a spot then start placing the sloped blocks in a circle (as you would find a rounded sewer system.
- Start digging down making sure you dig down at least two columns of voxels (as you would blocks in Minecraft) so you have one part to stand on, another part to dig down to jump between them.
- Make sure you hold 'CTRL' on your keyboard so you can descend down the ladder.
- Continue to place blocks to support the ladder system as you descend further down into the depths, but make sure your first ladder reaches the tip of the top blocks while the bottom is where you are standing in your hole. Your first ladder counts the most because it'll allow other ladders to snap onto them.
- Apply the second ladder once you see the bottom of the first ladder.
- Keep applying ladders when you see the bottom of each ladder by snapping them onto each ladder.
- Be extremely cautious as to not dig straight down viciously or else you'll either A) End up in a rough tunnel system, or B) Hell.

You have to give me a while to share images, but I do hope this helps.
so you didn´t understand the instruction by Arcitcu?
Its really easy. Just dig down a straight shaft to hell.
Use the block bench to craft a quarter circle block (sloped block) in any texture you desire
Set these blocks around you while digging down
Use ladders (craftable at saw bench) and apply to the blocks you crafted.
That way you dig a straight shaft down to hell but can get out again quite easily.
