In poking around tonight, it looks like the music files are a standard MIDI format, but you have to delete the first four bytes of the file to read them in a typical MIDI player. Any old soundfont should be adequate to record to a sampled format for UE, but for the greatest quality you might want to see if anyone has a Roland MT-32 rig they could play them through and record. It's likely the highest quality system that was available at the time the game came out.
Did Dark Forces have Roland support? You wouldn't want missing notes in the tracks. Besides, the Roland LCS might be more suitable for the task. If all else fails, I'd recommend grabbing CoolSoft VirtualMidi (is that what it's called?) and grabbing a nice soundfont to render Adlib/Sound Blaster audio.

Maybe you should try to talk to PhilsComputerLab about this.
Yeah don't support MT-32. Where are the midi files located?

Supported cards
a) Advanced Gravis Ultrasound and Ultrasound Max
b) Mediavision Premium 3D
c) Diamond Sonic Sound LX
d) Sound Blaster Pro and Compatibles
e) Mediatrix Audiotrix Pro
f) Turtle Beach Tropex
g) MediaVision Pro Audio Spectrum 16 and Pro Audio Studio
h) Soundblaster 16 and AWE 32
i) SoundWave 32

Good stuff to know. Thanks! I might reach out to my old Dark Forces music partner about this.

Pulling up the IMUSE.EXE configuration shows Roland support, including LAPC-1 and MT-32 for music, so I'm not sure what you mean by saying it doesn't.

I got to the MIDI files by extracting DARK.GOB using something called GOBREAD. All the *.GMD files are music, and need to be modified. I learned about the 4 byte modification by finding someone else who had posted altermed *.MID files.

Was in the games readme file from the original disc, lists all supported cards.

Awesome!

Bump.

Someone had mentioned wanting a higher res setting for standard DF. This is one of those things that could be made possible with the Unreal Edition.

I am still slowly working away on this, but a lot of my time is split between level design at Warner Brothers Games Montreal and teaching, so its slow going.

Thanks for your continued interest!

is this anything to do with the article i just read on pc gamer? Nightdive studios is looking to remaster this game.
Viscerus 2019년 1월 21일 오전 9시 17분
Nope. Not related to the recent tweets by the Nightdive Studios CEO. I am re-building the whole thing from scratch in Unreal.

On a side note, I would be surprised if Disney was interested in that.

Checked out your link. I'm convinced you are doing awesome work! However, could you please add a "quick-save" or save anywhere feature to your remaster? For us casual gamers it's seriously annoying when you're doing a tricky platforming sequence without the ability to manually save and with a limited number of lives, which you can use up pretty easily and then you have to start the whole dang level over again from the beginning.
P.S. Are you planning to remake the whole game, or just the first level? I'd love it if you did the whole game. You might have already answered this, but I'm a little confused still.

My goal is to get the Secret Base level fully playable (it was the original Dark Forces demo).

It may be possible to at least use a checkpoint system in the levels. I am not a programmer, and I doubt I would be able to implement a 'save anywhere' feature. Who knows?

Also, I am thinking of renaming this project so as not to be confused with the project being made by Jason Lewis of Obsidian, which is a full modern hi-res remaster. Mine is not a re-master, more a remake.

Bump.

This project is now titled 'Ultimate Dark Forces'.

Trying to avoid confusion with the Austin McComb hi poly UE4 project in the future.
Progress is slow, but stay tuned for updates. Thanks!
