SPOILER ALERT! Questions about the ending.

So I played this game all the way through each of the episodes, and I believe I understand most of the story, but there are some parts that still confuse me.

First of all, what is the significance of the question "What is a friend?" followed by the answer at the end "one soul in two bodies." How does this relate to the game? What am I missing? Does this relate to Tory somehow?

Second, I don't understand how the story's villain, Yuregazi Roth (sorry if I butchered the spelling), is two people - a man and a woman. My theory is that the woman sitting at the table in the final cutscene is really Yuregazi but the man whom Sam stabbed and/or grabbed the keys from was his dream manifestation of her. But, I'm not sure, so I'm wondering if anyone had some clarification.

If anyone could shed some light, that would be great!

Haven't played this game in ages, so my memory is a little foggy... But the "What is a friend?" thing surely must come from the fact that they were all friends who got kidnapped together?

Yuregazi Roth was a mad nuerologist in a foreign third world country who abducted a couple American backpackers from New Jersey and was performing experiments involving the halucinating subconscience while they slept.

The two Americans, while under hypnotics, spent three years believing they had checked into a rehabilitation center in NJ.

The protoganist escapes with help from Yuregazi Roth's deceased wife (I forget but I think she was accidentally murdered by his expiermentation...they may have had a daughter who died as well) hence a 'friend' not always being one who is still in the living.
