KOTOR 1's story is classic, and feels much more like StarWars. KOTOR 2's side-character's are kind of dumb and their stories are left unfinished.
Skills in KOTOR 2 aren't as useful as they are in KOTOR 1. I think playing a combat oriented class is always better in KOTOR 2.
A complaint about both KOTOR games is that Darkside choices make your character look pathetic, and playing Neutral-Force is never a legitimate option.
They're both good games, and both are worth playing. It's just a shame that KOTOR 2 was forced to release early and we didn't get to see everything the developers had planned.
If you want to visit the HK-50 factory and have HK-47 say, "Please shoot me in my soft meatbag underbelly reapetdly until I die."
The only thing Kotor II had on Kotor I was the gameplay improvements. Don't get me started on that restoration mod, thats all it is - A mod. Kotor II on its own is nothing compared to Kotor I.
Also, the Exile isn't a random person. The Exile was actually canon - Bookwise, atleast.
Kreia.
Lol uinque. Okay.
Yeah its hard to say characters lack depth in 2, Especially if you've ever taken the long about routes of getting Mira, then going dark and corrupting her, or the opposite of getting Hanarr, then going light and curing his madness.
After exploring truly everything with the secondary characters, I find my self more engrossed with 2's than 1's. The only fault I have with it is the ending.
Also the repeating characters were more interesting in 2 than 1 (at least in the case of HK-47).
Also anyone else think that T3-M4 thinks he is the star of the series?
Storywise I like both of them about the same. I feel the early parts of 1, (the whole ship emergency beginning and the whole 1st part of Taris), generally suck, and the game really fails to pick up until the undercity. It then gets better from there and the story engrosses you (especially if you develop the love story with Bastilla). This all culimnates in a rather great ending.
2, does a much better job I feel at the start, with the whole mining station mystery start, and then the story does well exploring a world preparing for your great confrontation with multiple sith lords. The problem is that after becoming so so powerful and vanquishing these foes, the final end just becomes something you can fail to care about. In nearly every other aspect thou it surpasses the 1st game. Addition of force forms, a huge plus, additional powers, prestige classes, more influence and secondary character development (to point of unlocking force potential in them), even the crafting and combat is better.
