STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™

Game Crashes After Character Creation
Bought the game today, and after I create my character and click play, the screen goes black and doesn't do anything else. I've tried verifying the cache, reinstalling, and something involving Mss32.dll. None of it worked. I'm running the game on Vista. If I could get some help, that'd be great.

thanks, its odd, i did that in the .ini file and saved it and the crash persisted, but when i actually entered the game menu and disabled it in settings it worked. Odd. any chance you could tell me why the flawless widescreen program only seems to work 50% of the time?

In order for Flawless widescreen to work, you need to start and quit the game. Then you open the game again and it'll work. That's why it's 50/50.

Thanks a lot, disabling those two settings worked!

Thanks for the solution to this, solved it for me too. Spent half an hour of my lunch break trying to figure this out (including spending ages creating characters only for the game to crash before saving!).

Turning of Buffer, and Soft Shadows suprisingly fixed my problem! Thanks much man, never would have thought about that.
No worries guys - glad to have helped.

WHY is this not pinned????

I just spent the last HOUR trying to figure out how to fix this game with whacko solutions like "Disable Videos" and "Add this vertex line that's ALREADY IN THE INI"

...seriously we need this pinned... NOW. lol

Thank you for providing a working solution. I was going insane.

Hi! I'm having a similiar issue when I try to play the game but it keeps saying there is a resolution problem and then shuts the game down. I can get to just before it says new game etc. The furtherest I have ever got was character selection and to the very first part of the game just before actual gameplay. Any help would be great. Just got the game this weekend. Thanks!!

What section is that under in the menu?

I was having the same problem. I went to the settings, and frame buffer and soft shadow are already disabled, and enabling them isn't even an option that works. I googled for other suggestions, and saw a guide that recommended going to swkotor.exe in the steam folder and changing the compatibility settings in the Properties menu. That also didn't work at any setting from Windows 8 to XP Service Pack 2.

Then I right-clicked swkotor.exe again and selected "Run with graphics processor", and changed from "integrated graphics" to my graphics card processor. Now it runs perfectly.
