STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™

Should I watch the movies first?
I bought this game knowing it's a classic for many people, but to be honest, I've only watched the original Star Wars, episode IV. I told a friend about this, and he says this game is only for people who've watched the whole series. Is he telling the truth or not?

Nope game takes place 4000 years before movies events. There is no common storylines.
But you should see movies anyway it's great.

This game takes place 4000 years before the events of all the movies so there is no story between the two. However you need to know the basics of star wars, such as what Jedi and the force is. Either way the movies are great

He is definitely not right. As the above posters state, the storyline isn't connected to the plot of the movies. Throughout the game you're slowly introduced to most aspects of the Star Wars Universe and relevant lore, and most of the game mechanics have nothing to do with the movies anyway.

I had only watched one of the movies before I played KotOR, and my game experience didn't suffer from it.

Your friend doesn't understand the game. No, you will not miss out if you haven't watched it. I'd still recommend watching the original trilogy, but you can skip the prequels. This game takes place 4000 years before the movies, so just keep that in mind and you're set. Happy gaming, if you enjoyed this, buy the sequel. The sequel was developed by Obsidian and has far superior writing.

Thanks for the responses, I'll give this game a shot then. I'll give the rest of the movies a shot, too, if I ever get the chance.

I know it's already been said, but it bears repeating... this game takes place LOOOOOOONG before the trilogy. Maybe it would help to do a quick wiki search on "The Force" and "Sith/Republic" just to get caught up, but I wouldn't say watching the movies is a requirement.

I have to disagree with The Nexus though, the second game is utter ♥♥♥♥. Don't buy it. Don't borrow it from a friend. Don't even look at it. You'll be better off.

No, the second one is a great game. It's even better if you have the cut content mod.

You don't NEED to see the movies, but if you haven't seen Star Wars there's something wrong with you.

First I need to ask: how have you gone this long without watching any Star Wars movies?
But no, you don't need to see the movies to enjoy this game. I'd reccomend it anyway just so you can get a grasp on the Star Wars universe.

The second game is not good unless the Restored Content mod has been installed, but I do want my however much time i devoted to that game back.

KotOR 2 has had very strange reactions, they range from unadulterated hatred to pure worship. The reasons for this difference seem to defy explanation, but seem to be concentrated around stability vs. story. KotOR is stable (has a good story too), KotOR 2 has a transcendent story curtailed by a lack of development time (RCM to the rescue) and an unfortunate buggyness that some people get (I have had fewer issues with 2 personally) and can't or won't work past (if you have issues with any game it is likely the solution is online somewhere).

There is also the idea that some people just hate it, in all cases I find it best to read the reviews that place the game at about average, the people who give overwhelmingly negative reviews were probably missing something, and those that give overwhelmingly positive reviews spend too little time on the issues.

Watch the movies. A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Reurn of The Jedi so you at least have an understanding what Star Wars is and to see where they were going with the game. Just another way to enjoy The Force.
