As for installing mods, just follow the instructions given with the mods. The mods are typically zipped, so you'll need to unzip them. There is usually a readme file with mods that will tell you what files you need to copy and where you need to copy them to.
enter C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\SWKOTOR
and execute swupdate.exe
Will download the latest version.
Is the steam version still 1.02? I came across this in one of the steam guides.

Patch 1.03
Update: 1.03
Normally when you install a steam game it installs the latest version of that game. Not the case here. Steam only installs update 1.02. Run "swupdate.exe" to upgrade KotOR to is final update.

Forum search lead me to this thread, can anyone confirm we have to use swupdate.exe still?
Edit: I'm not using the steam version, I bought the disk(s). And it's on the 1.00 version before anyone asks.
Edit: Never mind, I found one. Here is the link for anyone else searching these days.
