STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™

Game crashing to a frozen version of the menu
I've managed to get the game up an running, and I've had no problems running it in windowed mode. However, I've reached a point where the game won't let me load into a specific new area (East Central Ahto City on Manaan) without the game throwing me back into a frozen version of the main menu. This is gamebreaking, so I'd appreciate any advice anyone has on how to get past this problem.

Note, I'm running the game on Windows 7 on a computer which can easily handle kotor, and I've used just about every trick and fix out there to get it working, including setting to game to run on a single core. Please help!

Did KOTOR run with out you screwing around with it in the beginning once you downloaded it off of Steam? I want to buy this game, My computer is a Vista 64 bit

Have you verified the Game Cache?

Verify game cache then run the game in compability mode "Windows XP Service Pack 2" and if that dosnt help check kotor ini file and look after something called "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" and change that value to either 1 or 0 depending on what it is current.

Sometimes it happens that your character can get stuck/frozen (unable to move with keyboard, etc.) <- When this happens you should save where you are and then reload that save and it should work fine afterwards.

Or it could also be due to your graphic card. Since "newer" graphic cards causes old games to crash... which is quite common. However there are always these extra drivers/programs you can download for your graphic card which fixes those issues. For example if you're using AMD series you want the AMD Catalyst Control Center program/driver...

I run windows 8 myself and have no issues with the game so far except from stuck/freeze but i've not encountered any single crash except from movies which I disabled in the ini to make it work.

Thanks for the comments!

@THEDOCTOR
I did have to mess around a lot to get KOTOR to work on Windows 7. I found that following the advice from the follwing link helped:
http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=194296
Since you're running the Steam version of the game, you don't need to patch it or install any new .dll files or .exe files. However, changing the game shortcut to work on a signle core, disabling the intro movies, setting the game to run in windowed mode and disbling grass under the graphics options in game made the game run completely smoothly with no crashes or freezes until this issue started.

@DatGuyWithAbs
I tried that, and all it did was rervert all of the changes that I'd made to make KOTOR actually run on my system. The game wouldn't run at all after verifying the cache, and I had to redo all of the my fixes to make the game run again, albeit with the same issue as before.

@Tomoe
I've already made both of the changes you suggested in order to get the game to run in the first place. I haven't had any problems with my character getting stuck/freezing and the in game and movies work absolutely fine for me (they occasionally cause the game to minimise when they start, but re-expanding the screen casues the movie to play as normal). I've also just updated my Nvidia graphics card drivers.

The issue isn't really that the games freezes; the main problem is that as soon as I try to enter a plot critical area, the game refuses to load that area and instead boots me out to the main menu (which is frozen). I'm not sure if anyone has a solution, but I'd appreciate some help as I'd rather not start from scratch with no way of knowing that it wouldn't happen all over again.

No problem :) I'll help as much as I can.

thanks a lot man! And that doesn't sound to hard to do, but just in case.

Incidentally, I've managed to fix the problem. Turns out one of the mods I was using wasn't properly installed and was causing the game to have problems loading.

Thank you all for your help. Other than this glitch, I haven't had a single issue running the game in a window on Windows 7 (with in game movies enabled), so drop me a message if you're having problems getting the game to run.

alright! Glad you got your problem fixed!

I'm having the same problem. Do you remember which mod caused it?

I'm pretty sure it was the Sunry Murder Enhancement mod. I can't remeber exactly what the issue was, but I think it was that the movie files from the mod needed to be in the correct folders, not in override.

That solved my problem. Thank you! :)

So I'm having the same problem, although I don't know why mine is doing what it does, I don't have any of the same mods installed, speaking of I tried uninstalling all my mods and I got no results, and I tried verifying the game cache, for me this happens whenever I go to Dxun or Korriban for the second time, and I can't progress any further in the game. Is there something I'm missing that I need to do? Help me Taomi Sappleton, you're my only hope XD

lol :D

Is it KOTOR I or II that's causing problems? I haven't loaded KOTOR II since the big update last year, but the old fixes for it should hopefully still work.

If you haven't already tried the fixes on the following link, I'd advise you try them; especially the parts about Intel graphics options, forcing the game to run on a single core and disabling the intro videos. If you're using Windows 10 then you can't use the Windows XP compatibility option, but maybe trying it in Windows 7 compatibility.

The original issue I had was with a specific mod, so if you're still having problems after changing the settings above it might be worth loading mods individually to see if any of them cause a problem, especially any of them that modify quests or items on Dxun or Korriban.

I hope this helps!
