STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™

Crashing at startup
So I have recently ran into a problem with the game crashing to desktop, I decided to play It for the first time in awhile and stream changed it to a more efficient format following this change everytime I try to play it gets to the bioware logo screen and goes to desktop, it shows the icon on the bottom bar but clicking it causing nothing to happen nor does using the taskmaster to switch to it. anyone know of a remedy for this?

Had the same problem. Instead of opening through steam, open it through the actual execute file in the steam folder on your computer. Seemed to work for me.

I have the exact same problem. Starting the game directly from the .EXE file doesn't help at all, still the same problem.
I run Windows 7.
Do anyone have an idea?

I have the same problem - maybe it's incompatible with Win7 :(

Go to C:\ProgamFiles\Steam\Steamapps\Common\swkotor \ . Go to a configuration file called swkotor. Look under [Graphics Options] and there will be a line that says fullscreen=1 . Change that to fullscreen=0 , then also add a line under [Graphics Options] (the same section you just changed fullscreen in) that says AllowWindowedMode=1 . Hope this helps! If it still doesn't work, change your compatibility too.

found the .exe, ran in compatibility mode (win xp - as admin) ... no problems. also, found out that the game doesnt like dual monitor setups. my mouse keep minimizing the game as i mistakenly will click off screen .... but i guess thats becuase of the age of the game itself.

well this worked for me, but how do I get it to a fullscreen where I don't get 5cm of black bar at each side cause the resolution of my desktop isn't available? I'd really like to play this in fullscreen yknow =/

I had one of two issues each time I ran SWKotoR I with Windows 7, which I had installed from steam:

1.) Lucus Arts intro played, then it kicked back out to the desktop with the SWKotoR ICON still on the task bar. Selecting the task bar SWKotoR ICON did nothing.

2.) Fully loaded to first menu, but keyboard and or mouse input didn't work.

This sounds similar to the issue this thread was opened against. I used the suggestion from stubart above (thanks stubart!) and modified the "EnableHardwareMouse" option. The following worked for my two issues:

1.) Run <steamDirectory>\SteamApps\common\swkotor\swupdater.exe (compatibility set to XP sp 2 - ran as admin). Not sure this is needed, but I did it so I put it here.

2.) Copied a specific swkotor.ini into <steamDirectory>\SteamApps\common\swkotor directory. To create the swkotor.ini file I ran <steamDirectory>\SteamApps\common\swkotor\swconfig.exe (with compatibility = XP sp 2 and it was set to run as admin) which creates the starting swkotor.ini file based on your input. I don't suggest using "Scan Hardware", it didn't like my windows version or my video hardware. I then made the following updates to the created swkotor.ini:
Under “[Graphics Options]”
-Changed “EnableHardwareMouse=1” to ” EnableHardwareMouse=0”
-Changed “FullScreen=1” to “FullScreen=0”
-Added the line “AllowWindowedMode=1” (right after the “FullScreen=0” line)

3.) I set the stream lunch options to "/affinity 1". Not sure this is really setting the affinity, but it doesn’t stop it from starting so I’m leaving it. To set this I right click “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Repuplic” from the Library tab then select Properties. Then select “SET LAUNCH OPTIONS…”.

4.) Made sure that <steamDirectory>\SteamApps\common\swkotor\swkotor.exe was set with compatibility = XP sp 2 and it was set to run as admin.

It works each time I run it from the Steam installed Desktop ICON now. Thanks stubart for the help!
