I honestly don't like this game
I don't get why everyone are calling this "The best star wars game ever!" I find it rather boring. Sure the storyline is pretty neat, but the combat is akward, and I found myself quitting right before leaving Taris

Unless I'm missing the sharp point, I'm pretty sure this game is overhyped

Well, the best parts come after Taris, so... yeah...

This game starts like most other typical "Jedi" games, unfortunately. You don't start out as a Jedi, and you can't use Jedi powers / lightsabers until a few hours into the game. Personally, I wish they skipped Taris or shortened the planet.
I like Kotor but I suggest you try Kotor II (with the TSLRCM mod) for a non-generic star wars story. Kotor does get better like the poster above said, but Kotor II is probably more up your alley.

I have to say. You were only really just getting into the game. Everyone will admit that Taris is boring but once it opens up. That's where the game gets its high marks. Trust me, give it a chance.

How long does it take to get past Taris? I find the game boring as well.

I think those of you who don't enjoy this completely missed the point and should simply move on. This isn't a game for everybody. Combat isn't the main aspect of the game. And it is an old game.

It's a "classic" RPG of the kind that is not in the vogue anymore.

Also, why do you think there are "Skip Taris" mods?

Bioware's later game, Dragon Age: Origins, has a "Skip the Fade mod" too. Coincidence much? :P

Ant is right, this game is an RPG Adventure game, not RPG Combat or MMO style, so combat can be avoided in many situations and is a bit clunky compared to the other Bioware RPG successors. But if you dig Star Wars universe, characters, aliens and general story lines, this game is as immersive as it gets outside of perhaps The Old Republic and now defunct Galaxies.

But to your point, Taris is a drag - took me a ridiculous amount of gameplay hours to get through it the first time, like 20+ which is horrendous. But after that it really opens up fast and becomes a lot more fun with choosing a path and becomes very replayable, to a point where I was saving a LOT so I could jump back and try different choices in many scenarios.

If you got it because of the Star Wars experience, and want to enjoy most variety of storyline without having to endure Taris every time, pick a good character style and build you can live with for several sessions, then read a fast-track tutorial on how to exit Taris as fast as possible, keep your character development choices as neutral as possible then save once you get to Dantooine. Use that save as a starting point for replays of the rest of the game. Last I recall, it was possible to go almost full Dark Side from a neutral force standing on the Dantooine missions alone.

My first play through I did this as well, as it was a drag, but after my mate borrowed my copy and did tarris he was raving about it for weeks, once I had it back I shut up, put up and played through it, then loved the rest of it. If you can get the mod working, theres something called "Super Skip Tarris" skips all of it, still gives you all exp and items from it though

jtnix hits the nail on the head. Well done, sir.

Combat is extremely fun once you get later in the game. You have many abilities and powers at your disposal

20 hours would've killed the game for me but I was about 15 hours on my first run... and it was a bit of an annoying planet :)

Good post and you can go to the Dark Side really easily even if you rush through Taris or get good points most of the way.

[EDIT]:

I have no idea why but I wrote 15 hours instead of 5 hours for Taris lol. I seem to have misremembered!!

news flash this game came out in 2003. A lot of people just dont like old games or the old turn based pause combat in old Rpgs.

When I first played it as a kid I wanted to like it but I thought it was too hard, I had it on original xbox. I tried it again a year later and fell in love with it. To this day its my all time favorite game, I wish i still had it for original xbox because the PC version has so many issues. Upside is mods of course.

Kotor is the best star wars game of all time you can argue the Jedi Knight series is (because most people dont like turn based combat) I prefer Kotor's story and gameplay the jedi knight games your alone No party and theres a lot of platforming and puzzles not for me.

Around the time of release Kotor was one of the most gorgeous looking games visually and the story is superior to that of the prequel trilogy.

A lot of people cant stand Taris they find it boring. I actually like Taris and it goes by fast once you have played the game as much as I have progressing in the game becomes as easy as breathing.

When you get force powers, a lightsaber later and all the party members and the freedom to travel with the ebon hawk the game gets a lot better.

20 hours on Taris? By the Force, how did you not go mad? If I'd spent even a fraction of that time there I'd have snapped the disc in half back when I played it on the original Xbox.

I know for sure that each of the Mass Effect games lasts around 24 hours. (Sorry, it displays the time on each save) So yeah, excessive.
