Already Own it - free download?

I already own a copy of the game but it doesn't run well on newer computers (I think it's the newer graphics cards that causes the problem). I want to see if the Steam version will run better (I hear that Steam works with the games to make them work on newer systems) but I don't want to pay for a game I already own. Is there a way to verify that I already own the game so I can download it for free?

I'm afraid not.
You could try one thing, but it probably won't work for this game: if you've got a CD key on the box or in the manual, you can try going in steam to Games -> activate a product on Steam -> typing in the key to it, but as I said, it won't probably work.

I'm not sure retail version is any different from Steam version either. But after some googling and mild effort it can be made to work on modern systems, even on 1920x1080 resolution.

Steam version runs perfect for me and I use Windows 8.1.

this is such a boss game i hope it runs good for me, kotor 2 ran pretty good just super small cutscenes which was still good, and mod to finish game didnt work sadly had to go to youtube to see how things were supposed to go.
