KOTOR 2 was the first game I've played in a long time that had me going to bed every night I played wondering what the outcome would be for the key characters.
It's a toss up for me. Across Star Wars as a whole, I've never cared more about any characters than I do about Revan and Bastila. Their character arcs are so compelling and nuanced. But KoToR 2's story is more interesting and detailed. It's also just iterates really well on KoToR's original formula, so I think it's a better game overall.
If KoToR is remade with a boat load of new content, such that itemization, combat, and force powers are as interesting as in KoToR 2, then I think it'd easily become the better game.
Why?
Because it is not an inmediate secuel.
A lot of star wars series, animated series and the movies after the the prequel trilogy have had a terrible limitator and flaw: THEY ARE TIED TO THE SKYWALKER SAGAS.
They are simply trying to earn money by squeeze all the juice they can.
Contrary to that, KOTOR and KOTOR II are set 4 thousond years BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin, for those who don't know) and so there is little to nothing they can't make happen, since in 4 thousand years both the jedi order, the republic and more could be destroyed and remade so many times that there is little to no limitations on what they can write.
Actually for a story I'm going with SWTOR: Imp Agent storyline, and no one is going to change my mind.
But seriously yeah. KOTOR and the KOTOR era was written by BioWare during their height, characters, writing and storytelling is immaculate. Its absolutely incredible.
Then again, tbh I never found the movies such a masterpiece. They were good dont get me wrong, but they were just that, good. Decent. The reason they were so phenomenal really is tied more towards the setting and cinematography and the fact that no one had ever seen anything like it.
Passing the KOTOR era off to BioWare was a genius decision though, they really outdid themselves.
Even Darth Vader's iconic suit and respirator were made pretty much because a huge hole on george lucas' script
Yeah, his wife who was a big time editor took the rough draft and made the OT amazing.
Then Lucas did the Prequels without his wife and they werent as good.
It was written by a Star Wars hater that just loved to tell us how both the Jedi and Sith suck instead of trying to tell a good story.
And the final act wasn't good.
Obsidian had 14 months to make Kotor 2 and they still couldn't write a satisfying story.
His wife is hugely overrated. She just edited the Battle of Yavin part and for some reason the fans think she was the genius behind Star Wars.
George Lucas himself was behind the OT story. And even during the TESB production he was forced to work on TESB's story during his vacation from a hotel.(Since TESB's production had some difficulties and the movie was going in the wrong direction and went over-budget.)
The director of TESB made Robocop 2 which wasn't a good sequel.
And Lawrence Kasdan woked on TFA and Solo which weren't that good as Star Wars movies.
Kotor 1 was a masterpiece but Kotor 2 just plain sucked both as a follow up to 1 and as a stand alone story.
