How do security spikes work?

I have a ton of security spikes but I never seem to have to use them.

They increase your ability to pick the security locks on doors and chests. Must have a point in security for usage.

Since you never have to use them you're either bashing things you can't pick open or have decent security skill. To add on to what Ryat said.

is there a way to use them? In the second game you can select them when picking a lock or door but this is not possible in this game

AFAIK they just got left in the game after the devs decided not to implement using them. Best thing to do is sell them at Yavin for the credits.

In KOTOR 2, you actually use the security spikes more, but they are also more scarce when you start out.
