So, when does this game get good?
[SPOILERS for the first like 2 or 3 hours of the game]

Basically the title. I'm on the first planet, Taris or something? I've just infiltrated the Vulkar base to rescue Bastilla and recover some swoop bike part. I'm not a huge fan of the combat, it's pretty boring and stuff just randomly one shots you out of no where. I feel like the game doesn't auto-save enough, and also I'm not a Jedi yet? That's kinda lame.

Spoiler, obviously.

It takes several more hours, depending on how fast you play/skip quests.

You first need to beat Taris, which is one of the biggest planet in the game (quest/time wise)
Then you need to do several quests to be "trained as a Jedi" on the second pllanet.

So... yeah... it'll be a while

Once you're off Taris, it goes pretty quick. The next planet you get to you become a Jedi practically overnight. The combat borrows from D&D and similar-styled systems. Imagine throwing 2 six-sided dice onto a game board and if you die rolls out beat your opponents on specific roll calls, then you win. Its more complex than JRPGs and most action rpgs these days. The system has been more simplified to understand easier in current gen games. All that is my opinion on it of course.

The best part of the system happens more in the middle and the end. To me Taris is too long for a setup planet. Dantooine, your next planet, is when you really get into the story and why you need to continue your journey (light or dark).

I'm assuming there's no real way to just read about the main story plots on Taris and then just skip ahead to the next planet?

No, although theres probably a mod on the nexus or deadly stream for that.

I think it's fun the whole time even on Taris

Stick with it. Taris takes a while but you will be off it soon. Its starts getting even more good soon. Its super rewarding once you become a jedi because of the work its took to get to it. As for the saving, save it manually constantly. Its will make life so much easier. The combat to me is actually super fun. It gets better as you become more powerful and have more abilities.

Me personally I think the whole entire Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic Kotor game is fun but again I think what makes it more fun or I mean more awesomer is when you get captured by the sith about midway into the game and Malick a ♥♥♥♥ of a boss as he is or at-less he is a ♥♥♥♥ in my option tells you that your Revan his sith master after ecaping the bridge.

You're actually disappointed because you don't start the game as a Jedi? Not much for character progression or the rewards of your own efforts are you? Lol

If you didn't like starting off as a jedi then you won't like kotor 2 as it takes just under half the game to build your lightsaber.

Think of Taris as a tutorial. It goes over mostly non force users and throws in bastilla to help you get used to having jedi in the team.

If you want to get the most levels in jedi most people take no more the 4 levels in thier non force using class.

Currently i am only taking 3 level of scoundrel and set the difficulty on easy. When i get off taris i will switch it back to hard. Or if you wanted there is a mod that starts you off as a jedi. but being a jedi at the start just doesn't seem to fit the story to me.

The game gets good after Taris. A lot of people do not like Taris and I understand why. I have always not minded taris but after doing it so many times it is a drag. Non jedi characters are just weak and you start with very little money to buy better equipment and only 1/2 party members available.

You can play pazakk or do the Dueling Ring or Collect Bounties on Taris to get credits to buy better equipment. One of the better upgraadable light armors in the game and medium Armors can be found in the Lower City apartments.

There is a mod that lets you skip Taris but I wouldn't use it before completing the game once without mods.

If you find your getting one shotted pause the game and be more tactical about your approach to combat and lower the difficulty.

Taris is pretty meh. If you don't like the combat now you're probably not going to like it later. Personally I think the game takes off when you're leaving/have left Taris.
Thats kind of funny. I actually really enjoyed Taris and enjoyed building my character into some kind of rifle master. Then you go to Dantooine and have to talk to a thousand people and become a Jedi and ♥♥♥♥, which makes all the stuff done on Taris null and void.

Still, after lame ass Dantooine, it picks up and the entire rest of the game is badass.

That said, I'd say if you don't like it already it probably just isn't for you.

UPDATE

I've gotten off of Taris and become a Jedi Padawan so far on Dantooine, and I'm having a lot more fun now.
