Is there a point in repariing HK-47?
I'm on my first playthrough of this game and some of the guides I saw recommended putting points in the repair skill so I could fully repair HK-47.

But before I could get to this I made it to story event that fully repairs HK-47's memory core and I no longer have the option to do any repairs. Is there much point in repairing him early anyways? It feels like I just wasted my time on that.

He's just a good companion to have on your team so if you want him, the earlier the better

Each repair you make restores some of his memory and gives him certain stat-boosts. I don't remember whether the stimulus in the story gives him those same stat boosts if you hadn't unlocked them prior, but I would assume not.

As to whether there's any significant advantage, I would say not particularly. HK-47 is very middling in power and especially in vanilla, he's outclassed by almost any other non-droid party member even after the repairs. For the sake of the lore it might be worth it, but not for the mechanical advantage.

He gets auto-repair (health regen) when you repair him up to the maximum allowed by voluntary repairs. Considering who you are, and who he is, he should be a constant companion the instant you leave Dantooine.

I appreciate the responses. I don't think he got any of the stat boosts once the story unlocked his memory so I guess I just missed out since I thought I had more time. It always seemed better to me to keep Bastila with me for story purposes so HK-47 competed for the other companion slot and pretty much always lost outside of Tatooine because the other characters made more sense. He also wasn't convenient since he couldn't benefit from force heal. If I do another playthrough I will probably not focus on repair.

He has funny stories he'll share if you repair him. That's really about it.

What can be better than being referred to as "Meatbag"?

He also gets +4 dexterity, +2 defense on top of that and health regeneration, making him a significantly better ranged fighter (which he has to be because he can't equip melee weapons despite having high strength).

Add in good droid armor and natural droid defense and he makes a really solid ranged tank. Just give him a flamethrower and he'll be wiping out whole groups of enemies.

Oh, I thought that was only in the second game.

Nope. As you repair him in the first game he gets bonuses.
