As to whether there's any significant advantage, I would say not particularly. HK-47 is very middling in power and especially in vanilla, he's outclassed by almost any other non-droid party member even after the repairs. For the sake of the lore it might be worth it, but not for the mechanical advantage.
He also gets +4 dexterity, +2 defense on top of that and health regeneration, making him a significantly better ranged fighter (which he has to be because he can't equip melee weapons despite having high strength).
Add in good droid armor and natural droid defense and he makes a really solid ranged tank. Just give him a flamethrower and he'll be wiping out whole groups of enemies.
Oh, I thought that was only in the second game.
Nope. As you repair him in the first game he gets bonuses.
