It's a great game.
You will want the resolution patch though to use higher resolutions with a scaled UI/HUD, but really that's all.
The game still holds up amazingly. It actually confirmed my suspicions that some games were in fact better in those days. The story is so compelling and it keeps you playing because you want to know how it ends. I hope we will ever see such a good story-based RPG again, that isnt just a remake or tainted by cheap DLC / bloated cosmetics / microtransactions

That's obviously IF you're gonna play KOTOR 2. If you end up not enjoying 1, you won't enjoy 2.
it is dated by now (to be honest, it was dated back when it first released) but the story experience is great regardless. Well told, fun to experience and the janky gameplay systems don't drag you out of it too much. This is a roleplaying game with limited choice but strong story, so as long as you treat it as such and not as an action game you should have fun with it.
The second title is one upping this but it also REQUIRES the unofficial patch. Kotor 2 is as buggy as vampire the masquerade bloodlines and there is no way in hell you don't run into savegame destroying issues without the unofficial patch, luckily Kotor 1 did not have these issues, though if there is an unofficial patch it is likely useful just to fix broken talents and abilitys, the occasional quest trigger or transition bug.
The restoration mods are a mixed bag, I had huge troubles getting kotor 1 to work with them and some of the content restored is so clearly unfinished that you don't have to guess why it was cut to begin with. On the other hand: some nice dialogue / ingame cutscenes are restored aswell ..so it is a trade off.
I recently bought it for Nintendo Switch as well and just started a new campaign. The thrid time i bought it - and no regret - the money is well spent and supports development on future iterations of the saga, too.
The gfx on Switch seem to look a little better polished than an unmodded PC version. It's a bit fiddly to change resolution on PC to get a reaonable screen ratio along the way. Still there are plenty of vids that show how to modify stuff to your liking.
