EA didn't lose the rights to make Star Wars games, just the exclusive rights. They'll still be making plenty of Star Wars games, you can expect pretty much any IP they created like KotoR to stay with them.
All that's changed it that other developers will now also be making their own Star Wars games. (Paradox asked for the Empire at War IP, let's hope for that)
EA is a distributor of games, they make games, they make games in cooperation with other studios, they've taken over studios that can still keep their own name (Bioware -> SWToR), etc.
Anyway, I'm not sure what will come of it, we'd have to see. Obviously we KotOR fans would like to see a respectful continuation or something similar set in the Old Republic.
EA did not "create" Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic... BioWare did. EA then bought BioWare AFTER Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was created.
BioWare made KotOR in 2003 and Obsidian made KotOR 2 in 2004. EA bought BioWare in 2007.
EA didn't make KotOR and has nothing to do with the series. EA developed and published The Old Republic MMO, which isn't a part of the KotOR series.
The KotOR rights might belong to LucasArts, which published KotOR 1 and 2.
EA didn't lose their exclusive right, either, from what I understand. I think the news has just been reported very poorly, in a sensationalist manner for clicks, resulting in people assuming things about what happened.
EA had the exclusive right to publish SW games until 2023, and that hasn't changed. But their exclusivity deal isn't being renewed beyond 2023, and Disney is already making deals with additional companies to develop new SW games. But those games will likely release only after EA's exclusivity deal has expired in 2023.
So, EA's deal remains as it always was. We're just getting towards the end of it, and so other developers are starting to make SW games now so that they'll be ready to release once EA's exclusivity deal expires in 2023.
