(I mean a huge purpose is RolePlay not mechanic fact by sounds of it you even brushed off killing both directly and a worse one indirectly person yaa....;
as far as min-max idk there maybe a couple times you get bonus xp that tallies more or a couple side quests that give small bit more, but I would have 0 idea which and a lot come down likely more to timing).
Is it boring though? Well this is my all-time favourite RPG, and probably the only non-JRPG up that list. No, it's not boring. I wouldn't even say it's more challenging, or all that different really build-wise. You may lose some credits here and there, but it never seemed to matter a ton. Most of the times, turning down rewards just results in the people insisting that you take the money anyways. That or possibly other loot is given, or exp. I haven't noticed those specifics.
If you've avoided light side powers. Don't. My god they're broken sometimes. Speed ends up getting you a few extra attack roles that really pack a punch, and most of the other stuff just buffs this or that for you, or your entire party. Definitely not weak!
Overall though, the game is one of the early "Choose your path" kind of games. Not a lot is really different until that last planet let's you stray one way or the other. Builds of dark side characters can contain as many light side powers as you wish, and vice versa, or a mix-mash.
You play you. I have no desire to try the other path, and maybe you don't either. Still a fantastic game. Canon is Light side though. Dark side in the sequel I believe?
Edit: One thing to try for sure though, is the "not leveling up until dantooine" trick. You'll be forced to do the first level up, but you can ignore level ups until this point for the main-character. Why? If you wait to level up until you are technically a jedi, each level you then do from the start affords you extra level ups as a jedi. I'm doing it now, and sure enough I got to level 2 soldier/level 6 jedi immediately on Dantooine once I was a jedi. It was just brutal on Taris. My party had to carry the main character at times lol. Naturally.
Cheers!

Speed is a universal power, not a light side one. But yeah, it's OP as ♥♥♥♥. Equip a double-bladed lightsaber, use force speed, attack Malak, he instantly phases. "Hm, wonder if I should raise the - oh, it's on the hardest difficulty already, ok."
Heal is a really good light side power, though. And stasis is great for CC.
I remember once when I was a kid playin this, I tried doing a light side run, but got to Korriban and fell to the dark side naturally, just a few times of 'just this once' mentality ended up snowballing and before I knew it, I was in the red.
Is it even possible to be a dark side character? I mean usually in all RPG bad guys quests are half cooked - fallout 1,2 are good examples of this. There are ways to be a bad guy, but theses options are obviously worse than options available for a good guy/hero
What about kotor 2?
Is it better in that regard.
DS in this game is especially painful and near impossible for someone that cares / immersed because you going to have to do a couple really bad things at end (1 famously "hated" because it was such a hard DS thing which is a ""good"" thing obvious).
Kotor 2 pushes hard on Grey Jedi style mentality along with things about war you did and where Revan went etc... soo DS vs. LS would say boils more on if you want a waifu or a evil furball in it (where most that even want to do a DS play will just grab her 1st with "1pt" LS then go DS) BUT
will have a massive impact on companions as you make them either opposite of you from hating you or same as you by twisting them / making them feel peaceful .
I feel the role play of starting relatively dark or gray and becoming more and more light can be enjoyable.
On another note, doesn't this game reward you for going full light side or full dark side, and nothing in between? I mean, if I've built my character as a light-sider, but then I do a bunch of evil stuff or I choose the dark ending...that makes me much weaker doesn't it?
Yes there's never any point in staying in the middle. Go full light or dark, anything in between is just putting yourself at a disadvantage. Same problem that games like Fallout 3, Fable and Mass Effect had. Once you make your first good/evil decision you're essentially locked into that path for the rest of the game.
