Can i play this game without knowing Star Wars story at all?
I just bought the Star Wars collection only because this game was developed by Bioware and heard it's best game that Bioware ever made.
So, can i play this game and understand the story even without knowing Star Wars story at all?

Yes. It takes place long before any of the movies.

The Old Republic is an amazing Era and gives amazing insight to a glimpse of the Star Wars past. Its actually been referred to a few times, but only very vaguely (The Mandelorian Wars). IMHO, The Old Republic Era is quite possibly the best portion of the Star Wars Universe. If you watch the movie saga, including some of the spin off shows like The Clone Wars, you'd find that TOR is a completely different place in the universe, and quite fasinating. Now the MMO, SWTOR, takes place about a decade or so after the Sith Lords, but just gives you a much more open way to see all the universe in this time period.

You'll be glad you bought this 2-part series. although dated, and a bit slow paced, it's AMAZING! i still own my Xbox copies of these 2 games, since they've been a solid favorite of mine (though i dont own an xbox any longer, lol).

trust me, you will fall in love with Knights of the old republic and its sequel. by far it beats any other star wars game for me. imo even better storyline than the current ones in the movies. also there is a remastered edition coming by an indie developer although no confirmed finish deadline. its project name is Aperion. check it out. BUT finish BOTH GAMES.

ps. download the restoration mod from workshop for KOTOR 2 as production on that game was unfortunately rushed.

HAVE FUN

Welcome to the Star Wars universe! As someone old enough to have seen the first movie in the theater....this is how I would watch the movies (when you get around to it)

Rogue One (in theaters now of course!)
Episode 4: A New Hope (1977)
Episode 5: Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Episode 6: Return of the Jedi (1983)
Episode 7: The Force Awakens (2015)
Episode 8 - (estimated December 2017)
Episode 9 - (estimated 2019)

Then go back and watch episodes 1, 2 3, (release dates 1999, 2002, 2005) which are the "prequels" and IMO, not that great. If you're completely unfamiliar with the SW universe, this is the best way to avoid spoilers.

edit: edited post to reflect movie release dates
Or just skip the prequels altogether, which is what I do unless it's a special occasion like Star Wars Day or something...

Don't bother watching Rouge One, it basically isn't even Star Wars, adds nothing to the universe, no philosophy of the force etc, nothing really tangible at all, all it is is a cashgrab, no need for it to be a movie.

Ignore these guys when they're talking about the prequels, if you want to learn the philosophy of the jedi and the force and understand 4,5,6 better for sure watch them, because they give a lot of insight about why Aniken fell and what was wrong with the Jedi order of it's time and the code, problem with the prequels is a lot of the content within them is uneeded and just filler (except for 3 that is probably the redeemer of the prequels) there is a lot of good stuff in them you just have to mostly ignore the boring bits and interprete the meaning of being a jedi etc in the good bits.

In terms of having the best understanding of the force and the jedi, I would recommend you go 4,5,6,1,2,3 and either play KOTOR 1 before or after watching the movies, but make sure you leave KOTOR 2 for absolute last after you watch KOTOR 2 (that game is basically pure philosophy) watch SW7 after KOTOR 2 as SW7 is basically KOTOR the movie in terms of content like force wounds, the republic and the first order having the same level of power and the politics of that time being, playing KOTOR1&2 before watching 7 will give you a much better understanding of the movie.

Not every single Star Wars movie has to be the same.
Star Wars isn't only about the force, the universe is way more diverse than that, and there IS some philosophy of the force in Rogue One anyway.
It does add much to the universe, makes a lot of things way more interesting in later episodes, especially in A New Hope.

I disagree. It set to be a smaller story set in the Star Wars Universe that wanted to try something new, and it succeeded in that regard.

It didn't need to be about the Jedi, or the force, or anything like that.

it has no tangible characters, basically anything, the only thing related to the SW universe is Vader wrecking those guards at the end and them taking the plans to the ship.

It isn't even a star wars movie I could takeout certain keywords and it wouldn't be anything related to SW, I've never seen a movie so hallow.

Sure I'd love to learn about a character so long as they're actually going to show something worth doing, half of a movie with poor character development into a scene of 30 minutes showing some action for it to all fall apart because the director wanted it to be edgy and sheek, I didn't care about the ending anyway, so they failed with the first half of the movie.

Rouge one is undefendable and definately the worst star wars movie if you judge it in terms of Star Wars.

Cool you saw Vader wreck ♥♥♥♥ then a ship take off, doesn't really add much to the future movies does it? Even the prequels added much more than that, really that's sad, being less worthwhile than them.

Sorry, didn't know it's illegal to introduce new characters and basically anything to the universe.
They were way more related things to other episodes, one just has to actually pay attention to the movie and not complaining for the sake of complaining.
