Modern graphics drivers/cards increasingly don't handle the old graphics routines used in this game. Often it is enough to turn some of the graphics options off, but not always.
Multi core processors seem to handle the game operations out of sequence across cores causing various lock ups. Setting affinity to a single core can fix this, but again may not.
In summary, you may be lucky and have to do little or nothing to get either Kotor game to run, or you may have to edit files and apply other fixes. The games may not run at all but it is impossible to know unless you try them.
Your laptop is more likely to run the games than your desktop.
You can go to the .exe file and change the properties to turn back to 8 7 or even vista. If you want me to help you find the directory for the other game your having trouble with, just let me know and I can show you the file route here.
