Downloaded on Mac, getting Crashes on Startup
Hey, I've just redownloaded this game to my Mac 10.13 and I'm suddenly getting these instant crashes after selecting Fullscreen or Windows mode. I've googled solutions for this problem and have come up with people having similar issues years ago with no solution.

Etc. etc. (Just google mac crash kotor or mac crash startup kotor to see what I mean)

One person claimed to have found a solution but they didn't post it on their thread.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I'd really like to get this game running as it's one of the only things I have that this mac can run. Please respond ASAP!

Edit: Details in terminal on what happened during launch when the game crashed (The screen flashes black and then flashes to desktop again).

This guide helps most people who use Windows. I don't know anything about Mac, so I'm not sure if it will work for you... :D

Good luck! :D

Thankyou for the response but I'm afraid that I can't see anything in that link that works for Mac users. I checked the program files in Application Support and swkotor.ini is windows only and doesnt even exist. :(

But you have to have that file, right?
I mean, that file has to be installed with the game. Maybe it's not the same file format, but a file should still exist.
I know a fix, but it requires modifying the file's contents.

What is the fix? I think I actually did this on my PC the last time I played it. I can't really see any clear text files that I can open with values I can switch around in the Mac folder in the same vein as the .ini. Maybe I'll try to ask Zephyr support?

Argh, I tried playing KOTOR 2 and THAT crashed on launch as well!! Is this a common problem with these games on current Mac OS or something???

Try asking in Kotor 2 forums, here on Steam. There are a few active players on this discussion, but I think you'll get more useful advice if you ask on Kotor 2 discussions.
You can post a question about Kotor 1 there, too.

I hope someone who knows more than me will be able to help! :DD

The fix I mentioned, that can be applied by editing "swkotor" .ini configuration settings file:
Frame Buffer=0
Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=0
Soft Shadows=0

That's what did the trick for most people.

Once again, ask around on Kotor 2 forums for more help.
Good luck! :DD

I dug around on the web and I discovered that not just KOTOR and KOTOR II are having this problem. Apparently the replacement of the old file system for mac, HFS+, with the new APFS in High Sierra has broken a lot of older games and applications. The file system doesn't update when a Hard Drive based mac is upgraded to Sierra but it does if the mac is SSD based, which probably explains why some people on High Sierra are still able to play but I can't.

The fact remains that it looks like this new file system makes it impossible to play KOTOR 1, 2 and a multitude of other games. Is there even anyone responsible for updating KOTOR anymore? If not this game probably won't be playable for the overwhelming majority of mac users now and in future unless there is an update for compatibility with APFS (is that possible?) or.. I don't know. Sigh.

There is still hope the devs will update Kotor.

Star Wars Empire at War got its multiplayer activated again and it got Steam Workshop support!
Star Wars Kotor II The Sith Lords got a bunch of bug fixes and graphical updates!
Star Wars Battlefront II got its multiplayer online again!

I see no reason why Kotor wouldn't get the same treatment!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :DD
