STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™

Star Wars KOTOR keeps crashing every time a cutscene comes up.
I've searched past postings looking into this issue but none of them seem to have found a patch or an answer other than downloading some sketchy software to fix the resolution. Are there any new found fixes to this issue?

This should work for both of you:
1) Disable Frame Buffer Effects
2) Disable Soft Shadows
3) Try running the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3

@willemr1
I think your save file is corrupted and that must be what's causing the crashes.
What you have to do is: load a previous file and play through that location again so you trigger the cutscene. Save often and in different locations and keep a ton of backup saves to avoid future backtracking. :DD

How do I run the game in compatibility mode? The other two things are the default settings for the game. Thank you for the suggestion though! I'll save more and in more places.

I was having the same issue as you. I ran Steam in compatability mode (right click on steam icon, select troubleshoot compatibility) since I couldn't figure out how to only do it for KOTOR and that worked for me.

Firstly, you want to go to your Steam Library
Select Kotor, right click on it and then select Properties
go to Local files and select Browse local files

A window will open and you'll see all the game files installed on your computer.
Select the file named "swkotor" and right click on it
go to Properties and select Compatibility

There you can choose compatibility settings for running the game, set them to Windows XP Service Pack 3. :DD

I can confirm that the compatibility mode option for Windows XP Service Pack 3 works. I just tried it and it works great

I use Flawless Widescreen and have disabled FB effects and now it's running nicely at 1920x1080 without any crashes using Windows 7.

I just want to say that disabling Frame Buffer Effects and then Smooth Shadows (turns out I shouldn't have enabled them in the first place) fixed crashing for me. No need for compatibility mode. Also Windows 7.
