Monkey Island does not start on Steam Deck (resolution fix not working)
Hallo,

the game does not launch on my Steam Deck, neither in game mode nor in Desktop mode.
I have tried multiple proposals to solve the issue without success:

- manually changed the resolition in the settings.ini
- changed the resolution on my PC, waited for the cloud sync and then started in on Deck
- Installed multiple Proton versions
- Installed ge-proton via ProtonUp-qt
- manually copied d3dcompiler_47.dll to the game directory
- Setup a new Steam account, bought the game there and installed it

The strange thing is the following:
I installed the game on my fresh Deck and it did not start. I messed around with some settings, etc, installed some games and then all of a sudden the game WORKED. However, I cannot recall what I did...
I then reset my Deck to factory settings and since then, I have not succeeded to get it to work :(

Any ideas what I can try to get the game to work?

Installing Windows is my very last resort, but I would like to try some alternatives first...

P.S.: the same goes for MI2 Special Edition

Your remark that it works with some apps made me install all apps I installed before the Upgrade. It worked.

I do not know which one so this is my installed list:
The secret of Monkey Island:SE
Monkey Island 2:SE
The curse of Monkey Island
Escape from Monkey Island
Aperture Desk Job
Factorio*
Gunpoint
Oxygen Not included
Planet Crafter
Stardew Valley*

*= I have a feeling it has todo with the extra downloads some apps create. I notice that "Steam Linux Runtme" and something for Steamworks. They were download just before Factorio and Stardew Valley so I assume they are the source for the extra downloads.

After all of this MI:SE would download something extra during first start and only than it will start.

Hopefully this can help anyone. I had exactly the same issue as Pendora - A fresh install of only this game on my replacement Deck didn't work for me despite fixing both my cloud and local .ini files to 1280x800 resolution & windowed set to 1.

I knew I'd only installed 10 games previously on my first Deck where MI previously worked so I installed each one in turn to see what fixed it.

I installed PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX+ and opened that game to the title screen and closed.

Next time I opened Monkey Island (on the Steam Deck OS, not desktop) I got an extra 'Installing DirectX message' then the game opened successfully, rather than closing the window immediately.

Hopefully this may be of help if someone can work out the individual DirectX package that needs installing!!

I'm in the same boat. Don't understand why our Decks are cursed. MISE is the only title that doesn't work on my Deck.

Hi all, I managed to get this working on the steam deck OS version 3.2.

1. On the launch page click on the cog icon on the right hand side.
2. Go to properties
3. On the general tab set the game resolution to native.
4. Try launching the game.

This worked for me :)

Unfortunately, this trick didn't work for me. Did you use a specific version of Proton?

Ah rubbish. No I don't. Under the compatibility tab, I have 'force the use of specific steam play compatibility tool' unticked.

I'm also facing this problem. I've reached out to Steam support in the long shot they can help us trouble shoot. :steamsad:

Would be very nice if the devs could step in especially with the release of Return to Monkey Island coming soon. Now's the time to replay the OGs. :steamhappy:

This was the only thing out of all of these that fixed it for me:

I can confirm the instructions by @Turnbl work!

Before, I tried the resolution/settings.ini trick, different Proton Versions, etc. Nothing worked.
Then I installed the Demo for PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX+, launched it and then both, MI1 and MI2 started working after an automatic install of DirectX was triggered when launching the games.

Thx!

Somehow, I got to run MI1 and MI2 special editions… finally!!

IDK what fixed it… I have more games installed now and I also use GE Proton 7-30

I had the same problem. I used solution described above but instead of pac man, installed age of empires 2hd. Afterwards it is working, even after uninstalling AoE2.
