Here's one of my favorites:
Background: Bookworm
- Firstly, go spellcasting 1-2, this so you can pump out spells much more quickly, and if you're lucky crit, which does exponentially more dmg since spells have high base numbers.
- After that feel free to go the INT tree if you've been getting books of quick spells like Magic Missile, Eleclance, etc. Or just in general if you prefer raw damage.
If you get more books like Fireball or Shockwave, i'd say it's uber important to go spellcasting 4 first, so you can angle or prepare spells beforehand.
- Make sure to never use scrolls unless absolutely neccessary (e.g you get cursed or need map info) so you can feed them all to "The Scholar" so it can give you some spellbooks to work with. Because of that you're going to have to dump 1 level into Alchemy, but it's really worth it.
TLDR;
BG: BOOKWORM. PATH: SPELLCASTER: 4 -> INT: 3 -> ALCH: 1 -> INT 5 -> WHATEVER
[There's other Bg's besides bookworm that boost your INT but it's pretty straightforward so that's why i like it.]
I combine all the negative potions; i suggest you also not to combine Magic(For final floors principally), Vigor( Also for final floors but for your mates that may use strenght-based characters), Defense, Regen, and Poison(because someone can have Snake Eater or you can also apply the poison to weapons).
