I assume you're probably either not specializing in a certain spell or just not using backgrounds that boost your magical damage. So:

Here's one of my favorites:

Background: Bookworm
- Firstly, go spellcasting 1-2, this so you can pump out spells much more quickly, and if you're lucky crit, which does exponentially more dmg since spells have high base numbers.

- After that feel free to go the INT tree if you've been getting books of quick spells like Magic Missile, Eleclance, etc. Or just in general if you prefer raw damage.

If you get more books like Fireball or Shockwave, i'd say it's uber important to go spellcasting 4 first, so you can angle or prepare spells beforehand.

- Make sure to never use scrolls unless absolutely neccessary (e.g you get cursed or need map info) so you can feed them all to "The Scholar" so it can give you some spellbooks to work with. Because of that you're going to have to dump 1 level into Alchemy, but it's really worth it.

TLDR;
BG: BOOKWORM. PATH: SPELLCASTER: 4 -> INT: 3 -> ALCH: 1 -> INT 5 -> WHATEVER
[There's other Bg's besides bookworm that boost your INT but it's pretty straightforward so that's why i like it.]

Thank you I do like bookworm BG too since it feels like the best one. I'm wondering are there any spell books that I should throw away? like shockwave or flame Piller for example for something better?

All spells are useful ! :owforce: ...
Except flame pillar... that thing falls off VERY easily because it's scaling is horrible.
[Dash is useful but, err you won't be doing a lot of physical damage as a mage, so throw it too]

Other than that, every spell provides something useful that can help your magical ventures. But if for example you prefer to electrocute enemies rather than charming them to work for you then, it's totally fine to just throw a book you don't personally like. Won't have to worry about the scholar giving it back to you either since it never spews out the same books that you threw in it.
oh thats good to know and ty so much for the help.

You may also want to try the rod skill if you haven't already. Usually I firstly reach rod skill 4(4th is prolly essential) and then enchant skill to 3, this last one in order to support your mates and to support yourself since hopefully you've found a spacer rod or a wave rod. After that I'll just go 1 or 2(if you still have many potions) alchemy skill. Aftwerwards I usually acquire other skills like mainly intelligence or sometimes luck. :lunar2019piginablanket:

Potions are just something that come along the run. I just wait to be able to identify them all, then proceed to drink the ones I need and exchange with others the ones that I don't need. Also I always ask to have all the bad potions in order to eventually mix them into others.
I combine all the negative potions; i suggest you also not to combine Magic(For final floors principally), Vigor( Also for final floors but for your mates that may use strenght-based characters), Defense, Regen, and Poison(because someone can have Snake Eater or you can also apply the poison to weapons).

I have always wondered what vigor does, does it let you take more damage?

It let you make more damage, since it gives you temporarily 3 strenght.

You haven't lived until you've played the Death's Acolyte dex/luck Eleclance/Spellcasting crit machine gun build.
