It depends a lot on your playstyle. I also really love death's acolyte but that may not be for everyone.
Tinkerer is a good background to consider since it's full map mobility + easy fall damage avoidance if you're good at using it.
Death's Acolyte is a good background to consider if you're good enough at the game to not get hit, it's a fair trade for how much output you gain.
Bookworm is good for mage, but it only really changes how Iceball, Lightning, and Summon Monster work. Spell scaling per level added just isn't super on most spells - taking Raised by Merchant for more shopping potential works better if you're low on spells.
