The game itself is fantastic though and all the challenges make it worth playing again and again.
If that was true there would be no story to begin with.
Story is absolutely something one can critique the game for since its there for the same reason as the gameplay, for the player to enjoy. If this game is to be enjoyed for the gameplay only, why even make a story instead of making more content for the game? Its not like this game is filled to the brim with content...
All I'm saying is that you shouldn't judge a game solely based on the story. There's a reason it's called a game.
If a story is only told to "keep someone playing" it shouldnt be told in the first place.
Also, player engagement isn't the only reason a game has a storyline.
The story is part of this experience only to ruin it. I agree thats its not essential but its better to have nothing if the story would be this bad imo.
To me, in South africa. We have a political party called the Economic freedom fighters - who want to take away land owned by other people, without compensation, and they call themselves the Red berets/Soldiers/Fighters, etc. So I feel like my mission is to protect myself from them, despite what the game is telling you.
Do you see that? I still allow my imagination room to play within a game, created by these developers.
You cannot say you've seen or experienced this anywhere else-
It's great. The world is constantly moving, when you are, and you need to react.
It's brilliant. Thank you.
The story is not limited to the game itself,
Real world references represent the red people in the game,
If you don't know about racist South Africa, I won't suggest getting involved, as you'd be useless anyway, but it's got relevance outside of the game.
ie.
I add my own story, to the 'story' in-game;
