It is delayed if you dont want to pay some more. A shady business way i think.
While I am perfectly okay with profit concerns of firms, and know a lot about price discrimination etc, I am definitely not okay with strategies considering additional milking for the same exact product.
I get it, it sucks when games are delayed, it sucks when you don't get something as soon as you thought you would.
But it's not shady at all, in fact Klei have been incredibly transparent with their motives and direction.
Literally no one is making you pay for anything else. You just have to wait for Beta to end, which is pretty standard for a game. You weren't scammed because multiplayer isn't out yet. If you read the threads in the forum it's pretty clear that you would only get multiplayer once it's released fully and out of Beta. I know you said you bought it a while ago, but that doesn't change anything. Things get delayed, games especially get delayed. But it doesn't mean anyone has scammed anyone. It just means things were delayed.
Not to mention -
There were beta signups months ago, and every single person who signed up got TWO free keys into the beta. So you, just like everyone else, had the chance to get it for free.
They handed out around 160,000 keys, so don't act like you didn't have a chance at all.
And even if they were milking us for money - who cares? It's not a huge amount. As I recall, if you already owned Don't Starve, and were impatient, you could get 2 beta keys for $5.
They've worked hard on multi-player, when they could've worked on something else, even if they were asking money for access (which, considering you'd get it free, they technically arent) why is it a big deal?
Keep us updated!
This, really.
If you own DS, DST is free at launch, as promised originally. You guys have no point, you did not get scammed, you just don't like being stuck between your wallet and your patience. It's pretty easy to see the only problem you have is not getting it now for free, and you actually had many chances to do that. Literally everyone who actually signed-up and took some initiative got TWO keys.
There's a score of threads like this, please read them, they all go the same way.
"I don't want to wait or pay $5. I must have been scammed. After time, I get the complete version the moment it launches. Must be a scam. I don't get just one key for $5 if I don't wanna wait, I get a gift key for a friend, to validate the reason for playing Don't Starve TOGETHER, but it still must be a scam. They promised it earlier, and it's coming later, and no other piece of software ever had a delay, so I got scammed."
It's probably a good thing you guys aren't in the beta because I can just imagine the whiny thread/review about how things are missing or how DS has so much more stuff instead of spending your time bug reporting or just trying to have fun with what you have.
No matter which way you slice your distaste for how Klei is approaching this, you didn't get scammed at all, in any way, shape or form. You will receive everything they advertised previously, the only caveat is that it's not one piece of software - it's two. Owners of Don't Starve will get the multiplayer content for free WHEN IT IS COMPLETED as stated many times before.
The biggest reason to have a charge for Early Access is to keep out the riff-raff who have no business beta testing because they don't have any intention of doing so. Even if it's only $5, it works.
They are selling the game to those who do not own Don't Starve. If you paid ANYTHING ELSE AT ALL, it was your choice to do so. Previous owners of Don't Starve get the expansion they were promised at no charge WHEN IT IS COMPLETED. That is not a lie, or a scam, simply your inability to comprehend words and deal with delays. If you were being scammed, you'd get a single key for full price and nobody would get it for free. That's a scam, or a "bait and switch". They didn't do that at all.
DST is still free for all owners of DS once it is completed. There has never been an official release date, only a time-frame, and if you've been gaming for more than a few weeks, you know delays are part of the business. No promises have been broken.
If being worthy of being in beta includes legitimizing every business practice, every short comings, to sum up being a fanboy, I can agree that I am not okay with that. I have lots of early access games, I provided lots of feedback to many games, and this is kinda another feedback. This is scam, by the definition of what is scam.
By the way, I did not sign up for beta beforehand, because we have been told, It will be released at the end of summer, so ithought i wont bother for 2 months wait maximum.
If you see insulting others easier than counterargue, please go away and be a fanboy elsewhere. I dont need this.
How were you scammed? You still own the game, and you will still own the game when DST comes out of beta. You won't have to pay any more money, unless you want it early. They aren't asking you for more money either.
I am far from a fanboy of this game, and I haven't played it in quite sometime. I am also eagerly awaiting multiplayer and have considered buying into it. Release dates get changed, but they are still fully planning on giving DST to all the owners of Don't Starve for free, when it is ready. That hasn't changed. A scam would be if you didn't get it, or if they still expected you to pay more for it. But they aren't.
You have been around Steam for awhile, you should know how this stuff works. You are not new to gaming, or Steam.
I don't remember calling you names or defending EVERYTHING Klei does. You're going to two different extremes at the same time. I'm not really sure who you're directing that at, but I don't see anyone calling you stupid or anything. Just wrong, and that's not an insult.
Time-frames are time-frames. If this is the first delay in a game you've experienced first-hand, let me tell you there will be many more. It's just part of the business.
I'd like to mention something else: I didn't buy into Don't Starve until Together was released. I paid for a pack during the Winter Sale. I got a copy for myself, and my wife. We've since put many hours of fun (and have more planned) into it. I'm not some long-time Klei fanboy. I literally found out about this a couple weeks ago, and through 15 minutes of Googling, was able to find out everything one needed to know. I even have a pinned help thread. I really do want to help.
I know first-hand there's more to come, and not everything works as promised. You get to get away with that in Beta - it's what this phase is for. You should not have to deal with that with the full release, which you essentially already own (it's just not in your Library right now) if you were an original buyer of DS - the only people have any reason to feel remotely screwed.
But, in the end, you still get the expansion called Don'st Starve Together for free, as promised. They have been very transparent and very gracious with sales, free keys and bonus keys, not to mention the over 160,000 beta sign ups who got free keys (which provide the full version of DST at launch as well - even the beta gift keys).
There's a lot of shady, underhanded crap going on in Early Access. I'm actually part of a group that attempts to have a forum presence to voice the very concerns over bad Early Access practices.
You can fault them for being late as much as you like, but you're just wrong if you think it's a scam.
Not only are you going to get it for free, but it's a quality product that could sell for far more than $5 / two keys. You're not getting scammed, no matter how you want to look at it.
Nobody is calling you names, we're calling you out on being wrong. What's very rude is calling a group "scammers" when they've been open, transparent and quite gracious if you ask me.
I've been watching from the sidelines for a couple weeks, and it's just clear that some people will complain about anything.
Currently, they dont have any incentive to release the game actually, since everyone is eager to buy the early access version, and since they have to right to always delay, (about 1.5 year for the first time!) it is not even guaranteed that this game would be get released, since keeping it in early access and testing the fans patience is more profitable.
The best action would be releasing it when no one plays it anymore though, in the economic sense.
I wont complain if I get the game which I paid for. Like I said I bought DS just for its multi was coming. (DST model was announced later) Now it is out -with some missing features- but definitely playable, but I am being asked for more payment. I really think that this is what scam is, since when I got it, it is advertised as, "It"s multi is so near, be fast or you will pay more!!!"
I am not new to Steam as you also suggested, I know many frauds. This one is not as bad as them (No major advertised feature is cancelled for example) but it is definitely not white clean.
