They mean in DST specifically.

Neither the Things nor Maxwell's Door currently exist in DST so no, the rod had no use.

It's unbreakable, faster than punching, and lureplants can't eat it. It isn't literally useless, but it's less useful than any other weapon you could make instead; even an umbrella would be cheaper, do 70% more damage and keep you dry, too.
