Obscure IWD Secrets
This is a list of obscure secrets that you can find in IWD, that I've come across. Most of them will be practical, so these are the kinds of things that might actually help you out. No spoilers, just really obscure stuff. Enjoy.

-If you have a bard in your party, you can get extra experience points from the sea-elf in the starting town.

-There is a way to talk the drunk fisherman out of drinking and set him straight. I can't remember what you need, but you get more experience for it, I'm pretty sure.

-There is a small quest line involving the innkeeper in Kuldahar. It's some quick easy exp, if you need the boost. The tavern will start the quest.

-The Girdle of Gond can be upgraded by the potion maker.

-IWD doesn't have much pickpocketing, however, Kuldahar has a lot of great magical items that can be pickpocketed.

-If you have a bard in your party, the sword of Myrloch Vale +3 can be upgraded with a book you find in Dragon's Eye library.

-Orrick can upgrade your rhino beetle shield better and cheaper than Nym can.

-If you ask Soth for an engineering manual, you will receive 600,000(?) exp. If you don't ask him for it, he will drop it after being saved, but you will not receive the exp.

-Cynicism +4 can be upgraded by the innkeeper in Lonelywood.

There might be more I'm not thinking of. We'll see.

These are some real obscure ones for sure, most of em i weren't aware of. Can't say i have encountered any other ones though.

Nice list, I knew about some of these. The Sword of Myrloch Vale, the Girdle of Gond, and the Rhino Beetle Shield are nice to know. I just started a new campaign and will use that. Unfortunately talking the besotted fisherman yields the same XP either way. But it is nice to do it that way for a change. You need a character with an intelligence of 16 and a charisma of 15.

The best sword in the game is only useable by a paladin. Its pretty much pixel hunting... or you can use the highlight feature.

I thought that the best sword was the +4 long sword that gives a extra atack.

One more obscure thing to add. -- In the Vale of Shadows you should talk to evil Auril priestess (Lysan) about Kuldahar so she would say that she had worked there at the tavern. After that you can go to tavern and talk to its landlord. He would give you Lysan's stuff. There amongst other things would be a pretty cloack of protection and cold resistance.

Not a secret, perhaps, but an odd observation - To close the portal at the end, Everard casts an Illusion spell to do so. Illusion... not Alteration or Abjuration. Something I always thought was incredibly strange.

Note on Girdle of Gond. Potion maker (Oswald) in Kuldahar will upgrade it (for about 1200GP or so) after you brought him working tools from Vale of Shadows.

As a little offtopic - I wonder is there any such obscure things in IWD2? (I don't remember any from my playing it back in the days...)

There are more, Gamefaq has a great walk through by Haeravon where he details the "random" item drops and a lot of the obscure encounters, conversations, rewards etc...

Just discovered that if you bring the shield, Mystery of the Dead +3, to Edion on Burial Isle (HoW expansion), he'll upgrade it with Cure Critical Wounds 1x/day, and Undead Ward 1x/day. All that is required are 3 suits of armor from defeating barrow wights.

Here's a good one, when you are in Heart of Winter you kill these Remoraze (sp) creatures and you can pick up their carcasses just like Ankhegs in BG1. Now I carted these things around in my Bag of Holding hoping that I'd stumble across a use for them.

Take them to Dorn's Deep, in the Deep Gnome village (not even going to try and spell their name), there's a Merchant called Dirty Lew that you probably have already met. He will turn one carcass into a Helm that gives +1 to AC and some other benefit I can't remember, maybe Cold Resistance. There are only two Helms in the entire game that give AC bonuses (not counting that dumb one that can only be worn by Halflings), this give you a third. I put it on my Archer, she needed the AC boost.
It's Remorhaz, and Dirty Llew is found in Lower Dorn's Deep Oubliette hidden camp AR8004. He can craft a couple of other special items.

You don't need to have a bard with you, Bard NPC's can sing this for you as well, Telanis on level 4 of the Severed Hand (chapter 3) or Murdaugh in the tavern in Lonelywood (Heart of Winter).
I realized this when Telanis sung it for me but i didn't have the sword. :D

Found another one!

In Heart of Winter on the Burial Isle you can find Battle Axe +5: Young Blood. But it has rather nasty habit of 5% chance of turning its wielder berzerk!

But if you take it to Gloomfrost and find there a blind dwarf smith Tiernon, you can ask him about this battle axe. Tiernon will say that necromancer could tune this axe. And after you say to him that you know of one necromancer who lives on a Burial Isle Tiernon will write him a letter with instructions of what to do with the axe.

So now go to Burial Isle and necromancer Edion Caradoc for 300 gp will remove from the axe its ability to turn its wielder berzerk.

And you will have just Battle Axe +5: Young Blood without any additional effects on it.
