Primal Carnage: Extinction was an amazing game. Met quite a few friends on this jewel and had a blast playing it on TDM and Free-Roam. However, the game started to die down quite a bit and then the devs left the game. Which has pretty much killed this once great game. There's still a small community that plays this game, but for now I'd really suggest that no one picks up this title.
Overall though my experiences with this game were fun, but the game is on it's very last legs. Sorry.

I've seen a lot of negetive reviews on this game, and I didn't think they were too fair, so I decided to write my own little review. What most people are complaining about is the fact that most servers are free-roam/role-play servers instead of TDM or GTC. This WAS true, but as more people have become aware of this problem, more and more TDM and GTC servers are popping up. The new update also added a new game mode called "Survival", and it's pretty fun, and Survival servers have been replacing free-roam servers. The loot system has also been improving, especially now that their is a new member of the dev team to make cool skins. Of course, there are still bugs and balancing issues, but these should be fixed over time, and are largely the results of a whiny community. In the end, if you were a fan of the original, and you have patience, I would definitely reccomend Primal Carnage: Extinction.

Wow. The sheer amount of ridiculous recent comments baffles me, and is sure to run off potential customers.
For those looking to buy this game but have been confused/worried by recent reviews, PLEASE READ this! I am going to be addressing 3 major concerns and the actual state of the game after purchasing it.

1. "Its Dead."
I'm sure you've seen this atleast twice before reading this comment. There are so many people downvoting this game because of its alleged death. As someone who has played this game for hours, I'm going to be honest with you-

It's not.

Sure, it isn't hugely popular and well known anymore, and a majority of the servers are empty almost 24/7. But you'll be pleased to find active servers for all playstyles, along with a smaller yet dedicated community and very non-toxic servers that are literally full for a majority of the day. People are still interested in this game. In fact, one particular classic server that plays the game as it was intended is full, 30/30, almost all the time. There are plenty populated free-for-alls, and Roleplay servers are actually dying out, rarely full and few and far between these days - although still holding a major presence. A minor resurgence in interest for the original game has revived some servers, and unlike big games like Overwatch, toxic players are even harder to find than loot drops (which are a thing I'll get into later).

So no. It isn't dead. You'll be pleased to play with many other people.


2. "There are no more loot boxes, and all I want is skins!"

Unfortunetaly, yes, Loot boxes were removed from this game back in june, but I promise it isn't as bad as it seems. Random, infrequent drops will occur on every server and give you a random cosmetic, along with the community marketplace now being swarmed with people selling a wide range of cosmetics. And let me tell you, getting that skin you want for 8 cents is far better than taking a gamble for 13 dollars. If you really wanted, you can purchase boxes for cheap in the marketplace, however keys are rather expensive these days, so you'll have to stalk the store for an infrequent key sale. Either way, cosmetics are still available. You're actually better off buying the skin for an incredibly cheap price than spending 50$ on a bundle of boxes and praying you get what you want.

3. "The game is buggy and has too many problems!"

The game has its issues, like every other game. And, since the devs have moved on to other projects, Primal Carnage: Extinction has recieved very few bug fixes and updates. But none of these issues are impossible to work around. One big one is a GTTC bug that allows you to keep playing even ater the game is finished- but seeing as nothing past that point counts, why does it matter? It's just a cutscene delay, the game ened. Aside from smaller bugs such as the infrequent issue with hitbox reg. and other minor inconviences that various popular games are plagued with, this game is very smooth and bug-free. I'm sure there are map/mesh bugs as well, but I rarely see those exploited.

Aside from these, the hours I spent over my break playing this game were fun, adrenalined filled and entertaining. The people are nice, and although I got frustrurated from time to time simply bypassing the games steep learning curve, it wasn't toxic frustration- merely the "wow, I see what I did wrong, I'll have to change that next time" frustration. Due to the majority of the remianing playerbase being veteran, dedicated players, almost everyone is happy to help you out and answer your questions. The graphics are gorgeous, even on low settings such as mine, and although at times it feels as if there is a stark imbalance between the two teams (having a full server with equal people on each side is rather lucky, and autobalance is sucky), it is a game I'd absoutely recommend if you love pvp combat and dinosaurs.

With 200+ hours i can honestly say it's a really enjoyable game. Especially the Freeroam and TDM. The Game mechanics are solid and the overall design of the maps and avatars are fantastic. The different kinds of items you can collect also gives it an extra purpose. The best part of it is the wonderfull community. Theres still some buggs to be ironed out like the AI in survival but all and all i highly recommend it.

In Short:

Recent update ruined the game for me. Very poor decision making from devs, removing a system purely to lock it behind a predatory paywall.

I doubt I'd get my money back at this point, but I feel cheated out of every skin I've bought since the initial tint system was released. If you plan to paywall a feature, NEVER make it replace a FREE one that was considered part of the game.


Now for the details I really hope the devs see this, they need a wakeup call


Some background

This was one of the rare team death matches I enjoy (although I was hopeful for the sandbox mode mentioned several times in the road maps). I'm not one of the most regular players, but I would hop on, play for a while and support the game by buying a couple of cosmetics whenever I saw a positive update to the game.

There has been a couple of new systems added. One whereby the community would make modified dinosaur models that would be added to the ingame loot drops or to the store. Initially, most of the best mutations were reserved for the store, but this has since been improved (a good thing, in my opinion) and trading seems a viable alternative.

The recent update

Another was the tint system, added to allow personalisation in the form of eye colour and saturation tweaks to each skin whilst still keeping to the original concept. This prompted myself, and likely others, to purchase skins that normally appear too saturated (especially with some of the newer visual effects) and apply a new lease of life on them this way with this system in mind.

To my utter disgust, this system has been removed in lieu of a buggy, money grubbing alternative that a painful number of fans are excusing away on the discord (where most of the remainder community is active). Now, to edit a skin in ways that you previously could for FREE (after purchasing/earning a given skin, obviously), you have to pay for paint 'buckets' (sham colour palettes that barely make an impression on most skins/combos) and a colour mixer to apply them. The cheapest possible combo (with a 'slot', to be described in a moment) being over $5 dollars to apply. Hell, even an eye colour change!

A bucket will fill a single colour slot, or layer. Usually, this is meant to correspond with a part of a skin (to allow for more 'advanced' options than the prior colourisation system). In practice, most of the skins I tested each changed the exact same part of the skins and left the rest. Each bucket and the colour mixer required to apply it (permanently, thus ruining the skin for future trades might I add).

All in all, this system is less effective than the previous, more buggy and costly for no apparent reason. What's more, pointlessly so! Many have to play hours to obtain a skin they like and most just end up buying one of the ones from the store instead (judging by my own experience and the sheer number of store bought cosmetics I see in game). The tiny system encouraged people to buy more skins that they knew they could tweak if the colour wasn't quite what they liked, aka MONEY for the devs. But no, this apparently wasn't enough for them.

Conclusion

Why didn't they leave the free one in and have the more complex bucket system added for more detailed layered combos? Because it's overpriced and they know it. No one would buy the buckets if the old was still around because it's not worth it. I hope others like me will stop buying skins for the colourised potential and that the greedy devs learn their lesson that moves like this will LOSE their business money in the long run.

For an older game like this, you are reliant on a loyal community and support. When the game can be repetitive due to many of the modes not being viable and poor server options, one stable income was the cosmetics. Do cosmetics mean the be all and end all? No. But they are a huge way to encourage people to come back to the game to see what's being added from both the community and the general updates. Quite frankly, gameplay alone there are newer, preferable (and balanced) games. Many stay because they like the aesthetics.

Just like Primal one it is one of the best dinosaur games i have ever played. You can play as a group of mercenaries or as several unique species of dinosaur from the mighty tyrannosaurus to the cunning Novaraptor. Each content updae brings loads of new content such as dinosaur skins, weapon skins, new gamemodes, new weapons for the human arsennal and even sometimes new dinosaurs to play as most recently Acrocanthosaurus and with Ceratosauus Pachycephalosaurus and an adult version of the dilophosaurus coming in the near future. If you love action, jurassic park (or jurassic world), dinosaurs or all 3 this is the game for you!
