Primal Carnage: Extinction

Primal Carnage: Extinction

If I could change one thing about this game, I would rename "Novaraptor" to Deinonychus.
Because that's what it is, and you can't fool me. Deinonychus is what Jurassic Park's iconic raptors were based on and that's what Primal Carnage's raptors are based on. They did right in not calling them Velociraptor but why give them a fake name? All of the other dinos have real names.
The official reason that it was to avoid complaints of inaccuracy doesn't hold up because it's no more inaccurate than the other dinosaurs. So it's a little big. So what? The pterosaurs are naked, the Dilo and Cryo are too small and have spit attacks, the compies hunt in packs, the Oviraptor is hugely oversized, the Spinosaurus model is very dated and the T. rex has the boxy Jurassic Park skull shape. I have no problem with any of these things, but I'm pointing them out to underscore how unnecessary it was to mask the raptor's inaccuracies with a fake name.
I wouldn't mind if they all had made up names. Say if it was a lost world scenario with fictional dinosaurs that evolved from the existing dinos. But it's really jarring when all of the dinosaurs have real names except one. It's like if in The Lion King they just called zebras unicorns for some reason.
I am definitely biased because Deinonychus is my favorite dinosaur and it bugs me that it never gets any recognition in media since Velociraptor stole its thunder. But you see what I mean? Why give a fake name to a clearly recognizable dinosaur? It can't be an issue of name recognition when they're including really obscure ones like Acrocanthosaurus, Tupandactylus and Cryolophosaurus.
Also, Novaraptor sounds too much like Oviraptor.

That is definitely not the official reason. All creatures in this game are stylized. You can check out around the maps such as contingency and see lore about the Novaraptor actually. It's pretty cool, because Phoenix had two different species (innatus and absolutus, neither in which exist in the real world) of Novaraptor with their success rates, experiments, and other tidbits about how they came to be. In future phases of upcoming updates, there will be more lore pieces around the map to check out so we can learn more about Phoenix's Novaraptor. It is not any existing raptor, but rather different pieces of real life raptors into one.
The dilophosaurus and cryolophosaurus are the size they are because they are canonically juveniles, larger Dilo individuals exist, but they aren't the ones you play as. Quite a lot of the dinosaurs' info can be found on various dossiers and Phoenix easter eggs scattered across various maps.

Unfortunately there is not enough PC:E players who are total experts of creating workshop items like skins, maps, and other stuff that could of proven beneficial. Nor are they great at learning to host public servers. (mostly to the human team)

Though I do find it obvious how imperfect Primal Carnage was where people like Phoenix(as you've mentioned) have been under-pressure yet willing to get the job done. This might be true to others who might as well feel the same way.

Except that Dienonychus was only discovered AFTER Jurassic park released. The directors have been stated as bewildered at pulling a Simpson's and predicting the new species of raptor so perfectly.
Jurassic Park called them velociraptors because that was the most well known raptor and they scaled them up, audiences wouldn't know any better.

No, that is incorrect. Deinonychus was discovered in 1969 and Jurassic Park was published in 1990. Furthermore it is well documented that Crichton based his raptors on Deinonychus because he followed Gregory S. Paul's taxonomy that classified Deinonychus antirrhopus as Velociraptor antirrhopus. He even met with John Ostrom, the discoverer of Deinonychus.
The dinosaur discovered later that was retroactively compared to Jurassic Park's raptors was Utahraptor. I don't really see the resemblance, though. Utahraptor was actually quite a bit bigger than the Jurassic Park/Primal Carnage raptors with a robust build and oversized hand claws. It would fit better in the bruiser category.

I'm aware of the lore, I just think it's unnecessary and silly to make up a dinosaur that is functionally identical to an existing dinosaur in a setting with no other wholly fictional dinosaur species.

I see! That's actually pretty clever because there are baby birds that spit in self-defense.

if i remember my lore right, novaraptors way back when, i think in the beta of the first game, were actually called velociraptors. i think the reason they changed it was because fans were unhappy with that depiction? or it could be that they wanted to avoid any lawsuits since the novaraptors are very much like jp raptors. either way, i do like that they're their own thing. can go even wilder with the lore and design, not that primal has ever been one to go for realistic designs.

There is no way there would be any copyright issue. You can't copyright a real dinosaur.

no, but what they could argue is that the velociraptor from jurassic park is their own spin on the animal, thus content you can in fact copyright.

Absolutely not. Jurassic Park's take on "Velociraptor" was a standard reconstruction of Deinonychus for the time, and just about every pop culture depiction of raptors has copied it.

Awesome discussion, I have a question why do some of you have yellow letters and a star next to your name?

Those are administrators.

And there are other two ranks in between such as Moderators with usernames highlighted in orange with silver stars while Developers are identified with usernames highlighted in green with the yellow tag "[Developer]" on the side.

(Heard they had a decent reputation.)
Ah thank you for clarifying! :raptorkiss:
