Trine 3 FAQ & Troubleshooting
If you need help, please scroll down to the Troubleshooting section below. :)

If you have any questions that are not answered here, always feel free to ask us! You can post to these forums or email us directly:
support[at]frozenbyte[dot]com

If you need an answer quickly, I recommend sending an email - this is usually the fastest way.

Troubleshooting

GAME DOES NOT START / GAME CRASHES ON STARTUP / UNHANDLED EXCEPTION

If your game does not launch at all or always crashes at start-up, please first make sure your system meets the system requirements. You can check those from the Steam Store Page

TRY THESE:
  • Try to restart the game.
  • Try to verify your game files through Steam. This will also make sure that you have the latest version of the game.
Right-click Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power in your Steam Library → choose Properties → navigate to the LOCAL FILES tab → click "VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE..."
  • Try to delete the options.txt.
This will reset your settings, but will also help if there was anything wrong with your options.txt file. You can find the file by just copying the following path to Explorer:
      %appdata%/trine3
  • Restart your computer
  • Update your operating system and graphics card drivers
Remember to restart your computer after this.

If the above solutions don't help and your PC meets the game's system requirements, the surest way to ensure we'll see your message as soon as possible is to send us an email: support[at]frozenbyte[dot]com. Naturally you can also post to this Steam Community - we follow these forums regularly. :) Including your system information (operating system, graphics card model, processor, amount of RAM) when you message us will help us help you.

Bug Reports

If you think you've found a bug or feel the game isn't working correctly, please let us know! You can send an email to support[at]frozenbyte[dot]com[com] or post here, either method works. :)

When reporting bugs, please give us as much information as you can - that'll make it easier for us to locate the source of the problem and find a solution.

Helpful information includes your system information (operating system, graphics card model, processor, amount of RAM). A clear description of the issue is also always great - so please try to describe things like when the issue occurred (is it always during a certain level, for example?), how often does the issue happen (did it happen once or is it continuous), etc. :)

Level Editor / Steam Workshop & Custom Levels

All three Trine games come with a level editor for Windows. The editor will allow you to make your own custom levels and share them to others through the Steam Workshop - so even if modding is not for you, you can still download and play levels that other users have created!

Trine Enchanted Edition, Trine 2: Complete Story and Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power each use a different version of the level editor, so levels made with one of these editors only work with that specific game.

Hi.
Here's a few of other frequently asked questions here.
  • Does Trine 3 support 3D ? (mentioned here, here)
  • Does Ari Pulkkinen make the soundtrack for Trine 3 (Apparently yes, but asked here and here, on frozenbyte.com, everywhere)
  • Coop unlimited mode : a color for each character ? (here, and also in the suggestion thread)
  • The skill tree, is it gone forever ? (Couldn't find an other place than here, but I know it's been asked elsewhere)

I don't think people will stop asking questions if they are answered in the FAQ. Nobody reads FAQs. But with an official answer here, people who see new thread asking for already answered questions would be able to quote the FAQ, and that'd be cool :)

Cheers :goblin:

Yeah, that's the general idea. :) FAQs are pretty much always TL;DR stuff, but at least the answers are made available and easy to quote.

Also thanks for the added questions. :) I've now added them to the FAQ with answers.

Hi Riikka (Or Marjut ?),
A new question you can add here, is the question of the retail / physical release. It's been posted quite a few times now, especially in the last few day, here, here, here and here, and it probably won't stop after the out-of-EA release.
See you soon :)

I've updated the FAQ now that the game is out of Early Access and officially released. I included this question in the FAQ as well. :)

Nice :)
Congrats on the work you did on Early Access, and good luck for going through fuss the release is going to create. It was nice to have support so present and available.
I'm currently going through the Chronicles Of the Guardian level and the graphic artists really outdid themselvesn it look gorgeous.
Have a nice day

Hello there, I keep seeing the Windows mouse cursor ingame. When playing with k+m there are two mouse cursors next to each other (one from Trine the other from Windows), Moving it around feels like they are magnetically attached to each other. ;) When playing with a Xbox 360 controller the Windows mouse cursor is still visible. However this effect does not show on screenshots. Using Windows 7 x64, GeForce GTX 670 with latest driver, Trine 64-bit, max. details and FXAA.

So far I am really enjoying the game. The third dimension really adds to the gameplay. I normally wait for games to show up in a sale, but this one was a insta-buy and I don't regret it one bit. Keep up the good work.

Woohoo! Linux version incoming! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Cannot wait to play this! Game looks absolutely stunning with even more awesome soundtrack!

Additional Notes: * Highest graphics detail levels are only available in 64 bit OS
Well, it is final news about x32?

Why you again not add achievement for coop?

Ok, my specs are getting a bit old now, but I can run both Trine 1 & 2 at full screen resolution (1920x1200) no problem. I can also run most games made on the Unreal engine, like Batman Arkham Asylum & Arkham City, up to DX10 without any hitches at all.

But at present Trine 3 is completely unplayable due to stutter, lag and really shoddy framerates. I've tried turning everything off and reducing the resolution to such an extent that now I'm sure it's not my graphics capabilities.

My specs are:

Win7 64-bit
T7500 2.2GHz
Nvidia 8800 GTX Sli (turned off)
4Gb RAM

As I say, even with my ageing specs, I should be able to run this game sufficiently to play it through, but the framerate & stuttering really is terrible.

Even the dialogue cuts out during the load screens. Will there be a patch for this, I'm sure I can't be the only one? Any suggestions? ( Apart from getting a new machine :P )

You will have 1 gift with 3 games. You can try buying process for yourself(not as gift) and it show you, what you have and what you lost from package.

Thanks for the link. There was another link in that thread that suggested I turned off ambientocclusioncull (set to false). This has improved things a little bit, but performance is far from ideal. Thanks again for your input.

Thank you for your report!

Unfortunately there is a bug with the cursor which we are currently looking into. Sorry for the inconvenience!

However, you should be able to temporary hide the Widows cursor by doing the following:

1. Press Shift + Tab for Steam Overlay
2. Press Shift + Tab again to go back to the game

Cheers! :)

Unfortunately, your system specs are below the system requirements so we can't really help. Though you could still try if changing to lower resolution or changing other settings would make the game run better.

Cheers!
