Student Information Sheets - What?!?!!
So Wells' office has detailed files on who knows how many students. The files even have personal descriptions like comments about Max being "nosey." So what, the higher-ups at Blackwell just write essays about every student? Or just the interesting ones? Or jiblets?

Do schools actually do anything like this?

I would assume yes.. its perfectly normal to have records of all your students and the things the staff have noticed about them. As to not all the students having a record.. i believe max only looked at what was relevant... and most likely didn't care about anyone else but these particular people.

While I can understand logging important things, I can't understand logging everything about every student. Just re-read a few of those. The time it would take to write that much about so many kids would be sizable. Couldn't that time be more efficiently used on something else?

Those files are hardly out of the ordinary. Chloe's expulsion, Max's heroism, etc. It makes perfect sense to record relevant behavior stuff. They wouldn' be written all at once, either. There's probably evaluations or stuff is added as needed.

It seems perfectly reasonable to log things like expulsions and that kind of thing. Fair enough. But those information sheets we found even log personal things that are difficult to quantify. Examples: (1) "...Nathan is also popular with students and faculty." (2) Max's mentions her being "nosey" but doesn't mention a specific incident. (3) Warren's mentions that he talks a lot. Does Blackwell have personal observations logged for each student?

I'll grant that on second thought it doesn't seem rediculous for the files to exist at all, but I still think the way those files are written is kind of hilariously penetrating. PewDiePie mentioned it and I just felt the same: https://youtu.be/zCY2Gapsstk?t=2344

I would imagine that kind of information is helpful to keep for future teachers/subs for the classes. If a substitute teacher was able to read the notes on the students, see which ones they had to keep an eye out for, which ones would make trouble, and which could be trusted to do their work, they would be much more prepared for teaching the class. Another possibility is that the students who graduate from there would certainly mention the school in their resumes and they could have an agreement in place that workplaces could see the files as preview on who they were working with. Of course, It could just come down to "It's a game," but those seem like decent reasons.

@Nibbie

I don't doubt that information like the kind recorded in those files would be useful. If I were an employer, I'd love to have faculty's thoughts written down like that. What I doubt is that the folks at Blackwell (or almost any school) would have the patience to work that kind of thing out. Like PewDiePie said about this: "Teachers don't f------ care that much."

So Warren's file says he talks a lot. Did the writer of that document interview multiple teachers of Warren's to make sure that that was the consensus? Or did the writer just interview one teacher? Max's says she's quiet. How many people did the writer of her file talk to to ensure that that was the consensus and not that Max is just quiet in one class?

In college I might ask for a letter of recommendation from a professor. If I do that I doubt he'll whip out a pre-written dossier* on me. Instead he'll say yes and write it later.

It just weirds me out a bit. And yeah, "it's a game" so no real harm done or anything.

*There are exceptions. I have one professor who's super conscientous and does in fact keep up with all of his advisees.

I suppose I can't deny that.

it's really not that far out there that a private school like blackwell would keep such records on their students. it's not like a public school where they have a ton of students to keep tabs on. i guess if ya really wanna know if schools keep records like these then your best bet is to ask a teacher. but i'm sure they do 'cause when you transfer to a new school one of the very first things the school does is look at your record to see if you have been in trouble with the law and what you did, and if you've been suspended and why, your behavior, your grades, yada yada :)

I think it's normal, when I was in college we had individual sessions in which our tutor would have a catch up with us, and write down on our files comments i.e. PERSON A requires additional help with math etc. or is looking to be more confident in class and ask more questions.. but they weren't negative comments just constructive feedback..

I guess the only thing out of hand here is saying she's nosy etc.. seems odd, but Blackwell Academy doesn't have the nicest management. lol

Coming from a teacher's perspective...schools definitely do keep detailed records as many students as they can. If you're at a smaller school, the school staff/admin can better serve each student, so in a case like Blackwell (small, private school, probably with tuition) it's not surprising they have at least a snapshot of each student. Typically students with special needs or new transfers will have more detailed information than others. A lot of times this kind of documentation is managed by guidance department or behavioral admin.

This is true, too. Almost all colleges/universities have advisors or guidance staff that help make sure all students are on track and doing well. The degree of involvedness and helpfulness to each student is of course dependent on how much the students themselves seek help and other things like size of the school, etc.

Wow. I guess I underestimated the care that smaller schools can put into things. Or is it large ones too?

Alright, I guess it's not so silly. But while I'm trying to be open minded about this, reading those sheets again still feels really bizarre to me. *Shrugs*
