My understanding is that your game saves automatically every time you dock at a new location. Proof: I docked at a Marina to upgrade my raft with a Water Filter. I exited my game and came back to it, and the water filter I'd built was gone, though I was still docked at the marina. So it doesn't save what you did on that island after you docked, unless maybe if you slept at a camp fire or abandoned building/school bus for shelter.

The game is a rogue-like permadeath game so it only has autosave triggers. Your game will autosave every time you arrive or depart from a dock and everytime you sleep. There may be other triggers that I'm unaware of.

Playing on my switch, that's a complete le tbh, I've been stuck at 5.4 miles for almost 2 days, no matter how far I go, it goes back to that but there's no place to save, no places that are auto saving. nothing.

I think I'm experiencing this right now. Just replayed the same spot after dying 4 times. Finally got further and a message says "cannot save" and I'm just like... ummm... fffff
